The Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) is a bold and innovative collaborative effort to close the achievement gap in a geographic “Zone” of North Minneapolis. The purpose of our work is to end multigenerational poverty in our community, using education as a lever. We use a data-driven, evidence-based, achievement-focused model in which both children and their families move through a “cradle-to-career” ecosystem that provides comprehensive support. NAZ is a leading initiative in the national Promise Neighborhoods and cradle to college/career movement. As NAZ learns what works with families in North Minneapolis to address complex issues related to urban poverty, strategies are being set up for replication and informing the regional, state, and national field.
Position Purpose
Healthy Ways empowers children and families to adopt lifelong, healthy habits. Our program aims to improve health outcomes for youth in the community by:
- Preventing childhood obesity and unhealthy weight gain by increasing healthy eating, nutrition knowledge, and physical activity,
- Creating a culture of health and wellness in the community.
The part-time Health Educator will facilitate family health workshops for caregivers and individual goal-setting sessions with youth which will include physical activities and cooking demonstrations. This role is part of site-based teams dedicated to implementing Healthy Ways programming. This position will be located at 21st Century Academy, 3700 N Bryant Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55412. The Health Educator reports to the Healthy Ways Manager. This part-time role will work between 20 to 25 hours per week, and must be available Monday - Thursday and flexible Saturday between the hours of 1pm - 7PM.
Primary Responsibilities
- Facilitate individual and small group sessions to guide youth to adopt healthy eating and physical activity habits.
- Facilitate weekly family health workshops for parents and caregivers.
- Meet with students every two weeks for one-on-one goal setting sessions (Middle and High School only).
- Support site-based Healthy Ways team in implementing nutrition and physical activity programming.
- Document student activities, participation, and services provided.
- Provide consistent motivation, enthusiasm, and role modeling for healthy lifestyle choices.
- Advocate healthier eating for students, families, and staff.
- Gather measurements for height, weight, and PACER fitness test.
- Attend in-house professional development training.
- Help create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals in regards to diversity which may include geography, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, immigration status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, sex, age, ability, and religion.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must have experience conducting health/nutrition assessments, facilitating group and individual health counseling, and implementing health education workshops.
- Comfortable working in various urban settings and with diverse populations.
- Familiarity with motivational interviewing techniques.
- Team-oriented with strong organizational and collaborative skills.
- Excellent group facilitation, classroom management and presentation skills.
- Adapts well to changes in assignment and priorities with the ability to respond effectively to new information, changing conditions, and unexpected obstacles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience working with children K-12
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- This is an onsite role, and the individual will complete at our Partner Site located in Minneapolis, MN
- Work includes frequent walking up and down stairs, lifting, sitting, and bending
- Regular operation of normal office machines (computer, copier, and fax) is required
- Occasional evenings and weekends are required for special events
- Limited travel may be required
