Summer Camp Director: Henry Hird

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Henry Hird Director is responsible for the development and direct implementation of Frost Valley YMCA’s Resident Summer Camp. This position is focused on directing Camp Henry Hird, our resident camp program for campers entering grades 8 through 10, along with our Counselor in Training (CiT) and volunteer programs. A principal job function is to ensure that quality service is provided to all participants, families and staff. The Camp Henry Hird Director will assist with recruiting, marketing, program development, staff training, camp operations, and evaluation. 

This position requires living on site at camp year round, with room and board provided. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Camper Recruitment

  • Participate in and execute recruitment strategy to meet enrollment goals
  • Work with the Camping Services team to manage a calendar of recruitment efforts including camp fairs, open houses, info sessions, school and community events, etc.
  • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with parents and caregivers
  • Recruit, develop and implement the Camper in Training (CiT) program

Staff Hiring and Management

  • Recruit and hire a team of ~200 seasonal staff including leadership, international staff, general counselors, and junior counselors (staff aged under 18)
  • Supervise a team of seasonal directors and coordinators who in turn supervise all front line staff, providing ongoing coaching and feedback
  • Responsible for administrative duties including scheduling, payroll, documentation of staff coaching and evaluation
  • Work with Camping Services team to develop and implement staff training for resident camp staff

Program Operations

  • Responsible for all aspects of day-to-day camp operations
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations and American Camping Association accreditation standards
  • Maintain the highest safety standards for over 600 campers per session across all resident camps
  • Review and respond to camper and family feedback; providing prompt, friendly and informative service to stakeholders
  • Support the summer camp registrar to ensure camper registration records, paperwork and accounts are up to date
  • With guidance from the Executive and Associate Directors of Camping Services, manage the Camp Wawayanda program budget
  • Collaborate with the Activities team to develop and implement a quality program schedule for Camp Henry Hird
  • Create and support a joyful camp experience and environment, ensuring camp program is executed in a way that is fun, while also encouraging challenge and growth
  • Any and all other tasks as assigned by the Executive and Associate Directors of Camping Services

Rate of Pay: $52,000.00 to $60,000.00 annualized salary (position is eligible for overtime) plus generous benefits and year round housing

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older 
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or a minimum of 3 years progressively responsible supervisory experience in a resident Camp setting
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills 
  • Be a strong leader and be able to work well with a team of others
  • Be able to multitask and handle pressure well 
  • Enjoy working with children, teens, families, and other staff 
  • Possess clean, valid US Driver’s License desired

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • Employee may be required to traverse on rough terrain.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Salary Description
$52,000 to $60,000 (overtime eligible)
