Position Title: Chief Development Officer
Employment Classification: Full time, Salary; Exempt
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer, and is a subordinate Officer of the organization who ultimately reports to the Board of Directors

Position Summary: Responsible for leading all fundraising efforts, marketing and communications, and major initiatives of the Orangewood Foundation Development department. As one of the senior leaders of the organization, this individual will be influential in developing the strategy and culture of the organization.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Leads a collaborative team culture where all employees feel supported and able to grow in their careers. Supports the development of strong leaders.
- Achieve the Orangewood Foundation annual core operations fundraising revenue budget ($7.1 million in FY 24-25) and support the fundraising efforts of our Samueli Academy development team ($1.1 million in FY 24-25)
- Ensure donor stewardship is done in a timely and exceptional level for all Orangewood Foundation constituents
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with the Orangewood Foundation Board of Directors and significant donors
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Development department, in support of the Orangewood Foundation overall strategic plan
- Assist the Chief Executive Officer with Board recruitment, stewardship, and fundraising initiatives
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team in matters related to Foundation policies, programs and culture
- Lead the Orangewood Foundation marketing and communications programs and activities to increase the awareness and engagement of the community
- Continually develop and assess new fundraising initiatives to generate additional resources to further the mission, goals & strategic plan of Orangewood Foundation
- Promote the professional growth of the Development team members through regular coaching, goal-setting and performance tracking
- Foster meaningful partnerships between the Development team and other Orangewood Foundation departments, including Programs, Finance, and People & Culture.
- Collaborate with the CFO and Development team leaders to develop the organization’s annual fundraising revenue budget and the Development department expense budget
Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Five to seven years of experience as a successful, senior fundraising executive in a nonprofit organization with multiple programs, numerous revenue sources and a diverse group of supporters.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Board members and other volunteers in the execution of development activities that advance the Orangewood Foundation mission
- Deep and broad understanding of development operations such as donor development, fundraising, stewardship, “moves management” and data evaluation
- Experience with key marketing and communications operations such as public relations, social media, brand awareness, advertising and direct mail solicitation
- Ability to think conceptually and strategically
- Professional fundraising certifications/training preferred
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Work efficiently with the ability to effectively prioritize projects and tasks and consistently meet deadlines
- Possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance. Position requires DMV clearance.
- Pre-employment screenings include criminal background check, FBI/DOJ fingerprinting, TB test, drug screen, and previous employment verification.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
- Position may require use of personal vehicle. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending and lifting up to approximately 15 lbs. (i.e. tables, chairs, food, water, etc.).
Modification to work schedule may be made based on needs of the Foundation.
