Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Jumpstart Mentor to join our team and play a pivotal role in assisting program participants in gaining employment. As a Jumpstart Mentor, you will provide personalized guidance, support, and resources to help individuals overcome economical & social barriers to employment, develop essential job skills, and achieve sustainable career success. Your role will be instrumental in empowering participants to reach their full potential in the workforce.

Requirements

Core duties and responsibilities:


1. Employment Support: Assist participants in identifying job opportunities, obtaining resumes, and completing job applications. Provide coaching on interview techniques and workplace etiquette.

2. Mentorship: Establish a supportive and trusting relationship with participants, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical advice to help them achieve their employment goals.

3. Skill Development: Facilitate workshops and one-on-one sessions focused on job readiness skills, including resume writing, interview preparation, and communication.

4. Resource Navigation: Connect participants with community resources, such as job training programs, educational opportunities, and support services, to enhance their employability.

5. Goal Setting: Work with participants to set realistic and achievable employment goals, create action plans, and provide ongoing support to ensure they stay on track. Aid participants in developing a success plan to support progress, goal attainment, and successfully reaching benchmarks. 

6. Progress Monitoring: Regularly check in with participants to monitor their job search progress, offer constructive feedback, and adjust mentorship strategies as needed.

7. Collaboration: Partner with Case Managers, Community Health Workers, and other team members to provide comprehensive support to participants.

8. Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of participant interactions, progress, and employment outcomes.


Requirements/Desired Qualifications:

  • Passion for helping others achieve their employment goals and improve their quality of life.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport and maintain trusting relationships.
  • Experience in job coaching, career counseling, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Familiarity with community resources and services that support employment and career development.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license required and reliable transportation preferred.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (HSD/GED); some college education preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 0-1 year of experience in workforce development, community organizations, or mentoring.

Physical Demands:

  • Engage in light physical activities including participation in community events and occasional travel within the Detroit area.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 20 pounds. 

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments (e.g. home visits, office, care center, clinic. etc.). Work requires travel to various homes and businesses in all areas within the City of Detroit. 

Term:

  • Employment term is based on availability of grand funds.
