Veterinary Pathology Assistant I
Description

Texas Biomed is searching for a Veterinary Pathology Assistant I to join our team. This candidate will perform necropsy duties in support of research and to monitor the overall health of the non-human primate colonies on campus.


The Role

· Maintain, organize, and coordinate activities for the necropsy facility to include scheduling with PIs, research coordinators, biomaterials, and the pathologist on duty.

· Prepare the necropsy room to include verifying animal information, preparing instruments, laying out prelabeled cassettes and containers, and maintaining PPE and supply levels.

· Partner with a pathologist to perform necropsies and handle tissue collections with varying degrees of complexity for cassettes, frozen media, culture media, etc.

· Operate a bone saw for the removal of the brain and/or bone collections.

· Operate a digital camera for taking photos of lesions and download images into the database system. 

· Clean, sanitize, and restock the necropsy room as well as appropriately disposing of carcasses and other biohazardous materials.

· Assist as above in the BSL3 necropsy room.


Our Ideal Candidate: 

· Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences program in which successful completion of anatomy course is required. 

· Hands on experience in an anatomy course with accompanying lab performing simple dissections is preferred. A combination of relevant education and equivalent work experience (at least four (4) years) may be considered in lieu of degree.

· AALAS ALAT, LAT, or LATG certification, or Licensed Veterinary Technician, or equivalent certification in the medical field preferred

· Occasional weekend or evening on-call duty may be required.

Other: Work involves strenuous physical activities of various kinds with routine exposure to animals, hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions (e.g. exposure to unpleasant odors or adverse weather conditions). The laboratory environment is managed by stringent safety and health standards and with adherence to protocol, the risk is low.
