Position Overview

The Director of Business Development and Marketing leads and has full accountability for the success of the business development, sales, marketing and product development functions of the organization. This position oversees the organization’s growth strategy and efforts to strengthen its market position and clean energy impact. It is also responsible for identifying and developing favorable business partnerships and negotiating contracts.


Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with executive leadership to develop and meet company goals while supplying expertise and guidance on business development and marketing
  • Drive continual improvement and problem-solving initiatives within AE’s operations and support cross-functional initiatives across the business
  • Translate organizational goals into the department’s strategic goals and develop sales and marketing plans to implement them; communicate vision for the department
  • Collaborate with other departments to advance the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Identify, recommend and implement new processes, technologies and systems to improve and streamline organizational processes and optimize the use of resources and materials
  • Ensure that departmental decisions and project plans, such as those for staffing, development, organization, material efficiency, hardware acquisitions and facilities, align with the organization’s business plan, vision and budget
  • Establish, communicate and implement marketing and business development-related policies, practices, standards and security measures to ensure effective and consistent support and execution
  • Establish and administer the department’s budget
  • Present periodic performance reports and metrics on marketing and business development efforts to the president, board of directors and other leadership
  • Develop talent base for the department through recruiting and development practices; ensure that development needs are regularly assessed and met
  • Coach and train business development and marketing staff on effective consultative sales and marketing strategies through meetings, phone calls and field travel
  • Oversee departmental employee development efforts; develop and maintain departmental and individual goals to provide ongoing assessment, coaching and performance evaluation
  • Research and develop strategies and plans to identify and grow marketing opportunities and new project development
  •  Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of sales methods through the review of costs and results 
  • Continue to develop leadership skills primarily through formal and informal mentoring, leadership development programs and stretch assignments
  • Review and approve new hires, promotions, salary increases and adverse actions (e.g., disciplinary warnings, termination), with support and approval of the president and Human Resources as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • MBA, business degree or equivalent and 10+ years of sales experience in an energy-related field, including minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience; an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered
  • Working knowledge of using CRM software to manage customer experience and goals, preferably with Microsoft Dynamics
  • Expert marketing and business development leadership and talent management capabilities
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills
  • Effective problem analysis and resolution at both the strategic and functional levels
  • Exceptional relationship-building and collaboration skills
  • Leadership experience in nonprofit organizations is a plus

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

This job requires the individual to work indoors in a normal office environment. The duties and responsibilities of this position may include the ability to remain in a stationary position for most of the time. The individual will operate the computer, printer and other office equipment to perform the job and may need to occasionally move about inside the office to access files and other office machinery. The individual will spend an extended number of hours in front of a computer screen and will frequently interact and communicate with internal and external customers. Must be able to exchange accurate information and express oneself in an appropriate manner. The job may require occasional lifting or moving of boxes or objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Up to 25% travel.


Employment Type

This is a hybrid, exempt full-time position. There may be occasions where the hours of work may vary, be irregular, and be reasonably required to meet the goals of the organization.
