Pay Rate: $26.44 per hour ($55,000.00 per year — based on 40 hours per week), plus $100.00 per hour stipend for Weddings and Funerals.
Position Summary:
The Director of Music and Liturgy (DML) facilitates the musical and liturgical setting for all liturgical celebrations, to include Christmas, Easter, Confirmation, weekend Church services, weddings and funerals.
DML as Parish Music Director:
- Coordinate the music ministry for all parish liturgies.
- Assume the role of lead musician – accompanist or choral director.
- Makes creative choices of music and their judicious placement for liturgical celebrations, in conjunction with the Pastor.
- Recruiting and scheduling, training and supervision of various musicians – choirs, cantors, instrumentalists
- Prepares assembly for liturgies through rehearsal prior to liturgies and rehearsals with students in religious education programs.
- Disseminates music lists, rehearsal schedules and choral/instrumental music to all musicians as needed for liturgical celebrations.
DML as Parish Liturgy Director:
- Liturgy planning, in concert with Pastor, priests, deacons and Parish Liturgy Committee.
- Coordinates Church environment for liturgical seasons and feasts.
- Makes creative choices of liturgical variations and their placement within the liturgical celebrations.Secures copyrights for all worship participation aides.
- · Work with Director of Religious Education (DRE) and staff to prepare for all children liturgies and events.
- Meeting with either Wedding Coordinator, engaged couple or both for the preparation of the wedding liturgies, to include appropriate liturgical music.
- Coordinate with Bereavement Committee liturgy and music for funeral services.
The DML is responsible for educating the parish members in music and liturgy according to the vision of the Second Vatican Council. He/she will support the parish growth in understanding the role of music in the liturgy. He/she will periodically contribute bulletin articles on liturgical and sacred music topics. The incumbent will be expected to maintain an orderly and organized liturgical music library of various styles and genres for assembly, choir, cantor and instrumentalists. The position is responsible for the oversight and upkeep of all instruments and equipment assigned to our music program, additionally making recommendations for purchase of instruments and sound equipment, missalettes and hymnals.
DML as a Person of Faith:
As a pastoral minister, the Director of Music and Liturgy must be a practicing Catholic, and he/she has the responsibility to mature and nurture their faith and the faith of others.
Education, Training, and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field required and or equivalent years of experience.
- Proficient in piano/organ, in conducting, and in singing.
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft 365 and Flocknote).
- Exemplary communication skills -- working well with adults, children and Parish staff and Management.
- Ability to improvise on keyboard instruments as well as reading music.
- Catholic music, traditional hymns.
- Working knowledge of basic sound system functions.
- 3-5 years’ work experience preferred.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
