Description

Position Summary: 

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the integrity of accounting functions, particularly those related to grants, and the implementation and maintenance of internal financial controls and procedures. The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the completion of all general ledger entry including, but not limited to, receivables, deposit, journal entries, and bi-weekly approved accounts payable invoices when needed. In addition, in collaboration with the CFO, this role prepares monthly reimbursement expense reports, generates invoices, and completes the bank reconciliation when needed. The Senior Accountant assists the CFO with monthly closing activities including preparation of monthly financial statements and reports for management and external funders. This role also assists with the financial administration of federal, state, and private grants, forecasting and grant budget preparation and helps prepare schedules, provide documentation, and answer questions for external auditors. This position reports to the Sr. Director of Operations.

  • Work as a member of the Finance team to achieve the mission of the organization. This includes collaboration with the CFO and other team members to prepare bi-weekly general ledger entry of approved accounts payable invoices, communicating with vendors, ensure accuracy of all invoices (including coding) and that proper approvals are obtained following organizational procedures.
  • Prepare routine and non-routine general ledger entry of receivables and deposits.
  • Compile supporting documentation and prepare journal entries as necessary.
  • Review and compile supporting documentation and prepare bank reconciliation when needed; maintain detailed reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts. 
  • Prepare monthly reimbursement reports, and submit, as assigned.
  • Payroll processing. 
  • Provide subject matter expertise in grant accounting and compliance to assist in holding grantees and partners accountable to high return-on-investment (ROI) standards in program outcomes, outputs/deliverables, and other key metrics.
  • In collaboration with the finance team, prepare and submit invoices.
  • The position will lead in the financial monitoring and managing of project account activity, reconciliation and assistance with contracts and grants with sub-awards, purchase requests, financial reporting, and tracking budget to actual.
  • Assist with monthly closing activities and processes including preparation of monthly financial statements and reports for management and external funders.
  • Conduct subrecipient payment review, monitoring, and testing.
  • Assist with forecasting and budget preparation and help prepare schedules, provide documentation, and answer questions for external auditors.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on special projects that involve financial payments and processes.   
  • Coach and train on financial literacy for non-finance colleagues.  
  • Maintain regular, high-touch communication with senior leadership staff and other team members, as applicable, ensuring grant compliance and further advancement of ECIC’s mission, strategy, and goals.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar discipline required.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience required, including general ledger.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and philanthropy with an understanding of successful grant management & accounting in support of non-profit organizations.
  • Strong business acumen with demonstrated ability to monitor, compile, and analyze data to guide decision-making and capitalize on investment opportunities
  • Knowledge of financial policies, procedures, and regulations; knowledge of GAAP required; knowledge and experience with UGG desired; FASB and GASB experience is a plus.  
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements:


Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to others accurately. (4-5 hours daily)

Hearing - Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. (4-5 hours daily)

Visual Acuity – Viewing objects with close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. (7-8 hours daily)

Office Setting - Sedentary work in which exerting up to 10 pounds of force is occasional and a negligible amount of force is frequently or constantly used to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.


Remote work with occasional travel within Michigan or to other geographical areas for projects, ECIC meetings and to meet the needs of the organization.


Compensation: 

• Salary Range of $80,894-$88,893 commensurate with education and experience

• Benefits package including medical, vision, dental, short/long-term disability, life insurance, paid time off, and retirement of up to 7% of salary
