Job Summary:
This role will be responsible for overseeing the youth ministry as well as the technology and social media needs of the Parish. We have about 57 students in the middle school and high school programs (combined), a core team of 12, and about 18 in the young-adults program. We have a growing number of Hispanic youths participating in our programs, and as such will need a director who is bilingual.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct the youth activities for Middle School and High School, including “Youth Group”, retreats, and other activities.
- Coordinate weekly “Youth Group” including activities for Middle School and High School (separate programs) for youth to grow in the faith and connect with the parish, where they participate on a volunteer basis.
- Help develop and direct retreat experiences for teens.
- Engage the youth as active and visible members of the parish liturgies and members of the general parish life.
- Be present on weekends during/after the Liturgies to ensure youth participation in the Liturgies and promote youth activities to the parish.
- Communicate with youth and their parents through personal contact, print and electronic means.
- Help coordinate “Vacation Bible School” for the children and get youth to assist in running the program.
- Provide training in Safe Environment for the youth assistants.
- Oversee needed fund-raising events for youth activities.
- Interface with area youth and Diocesan ministers in regional activities.
Technology and Social Media
- Help maintain sound system in hall and church.
- Oversee technology needs of the parish, including TV screens in church and hall, computers, wifi.
- Direct Social Media outreach to youth and the parish at large.
- Assist with website maintenance, updating
- Assist Coordinator with the Children’s Religious Education program – roughly 10 hours per week.
Weekly schedule includes:
- Sunday: assist with liturgies, as needed and as available.
- Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday afternoon/evenings: conduct youth activities.
Professional Qualifications:
- Be a practicing Catholic.
- Be familiar with youth culture. Must have the energy and enthusiasm to engage youth and offer programs and activities to attract and retain youth.
- Have knowledge of Catholic theology (Youth Ministry Certification from the Diocese of San Diego (or equivalent) expected.Bachelor’s degree in theology or related field preferred.
- Computer skills to create and manage youth ministry web site, social media, bulletin articles and newsletter. Office skills necessary to manage required record keeping.
- Experience in youth ministry.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish).
- Also preferred: technological skills to assist other staff with running digital equipment (audio-visual equipment, TV screens, etc.).
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
