The Stagehand works alongside the Performing Arts Production Crew to successfully execute various Performing Arts Programs, including, creative development and residencies, dance performances, concerts, theatrical performances and music festivals. This candidate will be tasked with general stage assistance within the production team, seating riser construction and scenic construction as needed per show. Knowledge of audio and lighting is a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Stagehand will perform various tasks related to live theatrical productions including moving set pieces, scenery, furniture and props; handling and rigging ropes, wires, pulleys and other systems used to hold, raise or lower scenery and equipment including curtains, backdrops, audio and lighting; carpentry including building sets, facility repairs, renovations and other duties as assigned.
The Stagehand will be the main point person during seating riser and stage builds, and the construction of the outdoor venues. The seating riser and stage build tasks range from maintenance of decks and legs to sweeping and mopping prior to house open.
MASS MoCA maintains two working indoor theatre venues, as well as seasonal outdoor venues (a small club style venue, as well as, a large 10,000-sq ft black box theatre). The Stagehand will assist with the safe construction and operation of staging in each venue, with the assistance of a production crew.
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- The position requires general knowledge of various power tools – chop saw, table saw, screw gun, drills, sanders, etc.
- The position requires general knowledge and interest of stagecraft
- Must have a valid driver’s license and will be asked to drive, load/unload and pack various straight trucks from 16 to 40 ft.
- The candidate must be able to safely operate, Genie, Condor and Scissor lifts, or willingness to learn
- The candidate should have a working knowledge of stagecraft, lighting, audio and video.
- The candidate should have experience reading and executing CAD and Vector works drawings pertaining to the appropriate venue, or willingness to learn.
Work Conditions
- This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, with availability on weekends, evenings and holidays, for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours
- This position may provide an opportunity overtime
- This position may require work in dimly lit areas, and/or may be subject to strobe lights or other photo sensitive situations
- The majority of the workday is spent indoors, but occasional special events, exhibitions, and/or festivals may require working outdoors and in inclement weather
Physical Requirements
- Must have the ability to work overhead for long periods on rigging, audio and lighting including assisting on hanging, circuiting and focus of light/sound plots.
- Must be able to lift upwards of 75 pounds.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, crouch for extended periods.
- Must be able to work effectively using ladders, lifts and scaffolding.
- Must be able to wear PPE when necessary

Minimum starting rate of $20.00/per hour.
