Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises Fuels Crew (seasonal employees)

2024 Pay Range: $52,000 to $78,000. The starting range is $52,000 to $65,000

About Us

Evergreen Fire/Rescue, founded in 1948, provides around the clock emergency medical, rescue, and fire suppression services along with community risk reduction services to nearly 26,000 residents across more than 125 square miles. Led by a Fire Chief and the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Fire Protection District, EFR consists of six divisions: Administration, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Operations, Community Risk Reduction, Maintenance, and Wildland. The Volunteers and Employees of each division are committed to providing exceptional service to their community of residents, business owners, employees, and visitors. 


About the Position

The position of Wildland Lieutenant provides leadership, coordination, and direction for the fuels crew. The Fuels Crew are seasonal positions. The Wildland Lieutenant typically works a 40-hour work week, though may often require additional work hours for special projects and incident response. 


Essential Functions:

• Assist and support the supervisor with leadership, coordination and direction to the fuels crew 

• Assist the supervisor with coordinating a chipping program, assisting in home assessments, coordinating full scale mitigation projects throughout the district including pile construction/ burning

• Responding to wildland fire calls and participating in wildland fire training and best mitigation practices

• Leading and participating in initial attack, extended attack, mop up, and patrol

• Respond nationally on multiple wildfire assignments each year on an engine 

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor or designee


Additional Areas of Responsibility:

• Incident fire billing for agency;

• Training coordination for wildland division;

• Planning and weekly agency communication regarding wildfire preparedness; 

• Fuels moisture data collection and record keeping

Experience and certifications required for success

• One or more years of leadership experience 

• Wildfire firefighting experience on both initial attack and extended national assignments

• Mitigation experience 

• NWCG Qualifications: Engine Boss (ENGB) and current arduous pack test


Highly Recommended Education and Experience

• Agency Burn Boss (RXB3)

• NWCG Qualifications: FAL3 and ICT5 

• Classes: S-211, S-212, S-215, S-219, S-260, S-270 , S-290 and L280


Must have knowledge of:

• Proven leadership techniques and methodologies

• The principles, practices, methods, and equipment employed in modern wildland firefighting and mitigation practices


Must have the ability to:

• Motivate individuals by empowering, mentoring, and supporting professional growth of others

• Effectively communicate

• Prepare and analyze data to make decisions

• Utilize excellent organizational skills with ability to work well under pressure of deadlines and changing priorities


Working Conditions:

Physical Demands- This position requires the arduous physical pack test and other physical activities associated with fuels mitigation and wildland firefighting. 


Compensation and Position Information

Job Classification: Salary Non-Exempt

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $52,000 to $78,000. The starting range is $52,000 to $65,000.
