Description


The International Licensing Manager plays a crucial role in managing all aspects of Dark Horse controlled or represented intellectual properties (as allowable by contract or ownership) across the globe. They are responsible for negotiating and securing licensing agreements for the localized publication of controlled properties, driving revenue growth through strategic partnerships, and ensuring adherence to brand standards and contractual agreements. 


Primary responsibilities to include but are not limited to: 


  • Identifying potential publishing opportunities and negotiating agreements that align with the goals of Dark Horse and its partners 
  • Reviewing contracts to determine the titles to which translation rights are available and keeping department records up to date 
  • Preparing and sending rights guides and e-newsletters 
  • Tracking submissions and sending review materials, final files, and finished books 
  • Reviewing translated materials and seeking approval from licensors 
  • Working in-step with the department’s other International Licensing Manager to split responsibilities by territory and avoid duplication of efforts. 
  • Oversight of invoicing and payment tracking with accounting department 
  • Providing timely responses to inquiries from publishers and licensors regarding publication schedules, printing specifications, and file availability 
  • Coordinating permissions, renewals/extensions, and amendments 
  • Preparing for and attending international book fairs (Bologna, Frankfurt) and domestic comics conventions (San Diego) 
  • Building and maintaining trust and rapport with various industry professionals (publishers, agents, studios, creators, internal staff) 
Requirements
  • 1-3 years experience in licensing/localized publishing industry. International experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Talent for prioritizing, organizing, and multi-tasking to meet deadlines 
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills 
  • A strong desire to collaborate, share, listen, and learn 
  • Flexibility to work well in an in-office team setting as well as independently on your own (working from home or while traveling)
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a collaborative approach to team management 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an understanding of and patience for  potential language barriers when communicating internationally  
  • Familiarity with Mac OS and Microsoft Office 
  • Ability to travel to domestically and internationally, must have valid passport
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds and assist with booth set-up at the various fairs and conventions 

Preferred: 

  • Familiarity with publishing, licensing or legal environments and terminology
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Knowledge of any of the following: comics industry, book publishing, toy/collectible industry
  • An interest in popular culture, including comics, manga, TV/movies, video games, etc. 
  • Fluency in foreign languages a plus but not required
