Pay Tier: 7

SUMMARY 


Trinity Rep seeks a creative, analytical, innovative leader to serve in the role of director of marketing & communications. This position supervises and leads all aspects of marketing and communications efforts for Trinity Rep, focusing on elevating Trinity Rep’s brand and expanding public awareness of mission, values, and programs; growing new audiences while deepening relationships with current audiences; and achieving and surpassing earned revenue and participation goals through single ticket and subscription sales. At a time of industry transition, this individual should be a forward thinker, open to ideas that will consider changes in the traditional business model for earned revenue.  


Reporting to the executive director, this position works closely and collaboratively with the theater’s artistic director, senior management team, and Board of Trustees. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader and highly organized project manager with significant experience in the creation, execution, and management of compelling and successful marketing and communications campaigns. Enthusiasm for the arts, and a commitment to inclusion and anti-racism is essential. 


The director of marketing and communications has three full-time direct reports: assistant director of ticketing and sales, graphic designer, and communications specialist.  They also manage relationships with many different contractors including: photographers, videographers, digital media collaborators, and advertising partners.  


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: 


Campaign Planning, Implementation, and Management 

  • Create and execute audience development strategies and initiatives, including direct mail, radio, television, print, outdoor, grassroots, and digital advertising and publicity 
  • Establish, implement, and achieve campaign goals related to: season subscription sales; single ticket sales; A Christmas Carol unique promotion; group sales and Project Discovery student matinees  
  • Work in partnership with the development department and director of institutional advancement to coordinate all fundraising messaging to broaden the reach of donors and to support the growth of our donor base including but not limited to ticket buyer to donor conversion 
  • Collaborate with the EDIA, Brown/Trinity MFA, education, and community engagement departments to develop and implement marketing and communication plans to reach revenue and participation goals for class enrollment and external programs, encouraging more people to step into Trinity Rep and engage with our work in the classroom and beyond 

Public Relations and Communications 

  • Manage media relations, the editing of press releases, solicitation of feature coverage and reviews, production of promotional materials, and opening night ticketing planning 
  • Create and implement public relations outreach initiatives to promote specific productions and the organizational brand as a whole 
  • Ensure accurate and widespread calendar listings
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive digital strategy, including the timely maintenance of Trinity Rep’s website, social media channels, and video
  • Manage the development of Trinity Rep’s printed and electronic publications, including playbill preparation and email strategy 
  • Manage communications for, and with input from, the development department including the annual fund, special events, and other campaigns 
  • Represent Trinity Rep as media spokesperson, as deemed appropriate by the artistic director and executive director 
  • Solicit, secure, and maintain media sponsorship and advertising trade agreements

Management and Administration 

  • Advance, support, and promote organizational equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility goals in staffing, policies, procedures, and practices 
  • Establish and maintain productive, collaborative working relationships with senior management and board members to meet and exceed earned income and overall organizational goals 
  • Manage the performance of and inspire results-driven environment for the marketing & communications team, ensuring all members meet company-wide deadlines and work collaboratively with purpose 
  • Manage assistant director of ticketing and sales, in overseeing the ticket office, and aligning efforts to build patron loyalty, retention, and uphold exceptional service and customer purchasing experience as well as setting pricing, sales goals, and revenue projections 
  • Establish goals for earned income with the assistant director of ticketing and sales, and manage department budget and resources to achieve established goals?in partnership with the executive director 
  • Create, implement, and analyze patron surveys and evaluation systems 
  • Analyze historical and current sales data and patterns to enable data-driven decision making and forecasting 
  • Track and report on progress towards goals and adjust strategies as needed 
  • Maintain the theater’s print, clipping, press release, and photographic archive within the Trinity Rep campus as well as providing duplicates to the Providence Public Library (posters and programs at this point) and Brown University’s John Hay Library 
  • Other duties as assigned   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


Supervise, manage and lead a department of three full-time employees (assistant director of ticketing and sales, graphic designer, and communications specialist) as well as an occasional intern or apprentice and administrative volunteers as necessary.

Education and/or Experience:  


Seven or more years of related experience and/or training in marketing and communications; interest and/or involvement in an arts-related enterprise. 


Language Skills:  


Excellent, persuasive, and diplomatic communicator with the ability to positively interact with, effectively share information with, and respond to questions from media, patrons, managers, colleagues, and the general public in person, by telephone, and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable presenting to groups. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret conversations and written materials, including narratives, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, business plans, and procedure manuals.

Mathematical Skills:


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and area. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to understand and apply concepts of probability. Ability to manage a budget and project future sales.
 

Reasoning Ability:


High degree of integrity and professionalism, respecting confidential information and relationships. Computer Skills:


To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of customer relationship management and/or database software (PatronManager or Salesforce preferred); ticketing software; internet software; order processing systems; spreadsheet software; and word processing software.
