Description

The Safety and Security Officers ensure museum staff, guests and property remain safe and secure while remaining approachable to guests and staff. They're first on the scene in potentially stressful situations, so these team members need to be observant, calm under pressure and customer service-oriented. They must either be CPR/First Aid certified or complete museum-provided certification training within the first 3 months of employment.


This position works under the direction of an on-duty manager or supervisor. It is expected that any situation in which escalation occurs, the supervisor will be contacted to intervene or 9-1-1 called.


  • Perform daily safety and security checklist noting any reportable conditions
  • Patrol museum building and grounds to identify safety and security issues, provide guest and staff assistance and act as needed to ensure safety and security of staff, guests and museum property
  • Secure the building each evening according to established protocols
  • Escort staff and guests out of the building as requested
  • Respond calmly and professionally to guest’s and staff’s requests for emergency assistance. This may include responding to: lost children concerns, injuries, medical emergencies, safety concerns and other issues as needed
  • Identify emergency situations and contact emergency services such as police, EMSA and fire department as needed
  • Complete incident and accident forms accurately and in a timely fashion
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Serve as a public ambassador for the museum, behaving professionally at all times
Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • First Aid/ CPR certification either current or attained at museum’s expense within the first 3 months of employment
  • Able to accommodate a flexible working hour and schedule, working after-hour events, weekends, and holidays.
  • Previous/current military experience a plus

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Working Conditions

This position works in an active and busy museum setting and requires the ability to focus on remembering details in that setting.


This position:

  • Requires standing and walking for long periods at a time
  • May require occasionally working on a computer for long periods of time, using a keyboard, viewing a digital screen.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds of medical equipment and other supplies).
  • Requires being outside in variable weather including rain, heat, snow, etc.
