MORNING DUTIES: Opening Daily Checklist
- Assist technicians in cleaning, feeding, walking, and providing general care to all hospital patients as ordered by doctor. Administer medication to patients only under direct technician or veterinary supervision.
- Turn on all equipment.
- Assist the technician in admitting and preparing surgery and drop-off patients.
- Assist in making sure all necessary packs and equipment are ready/clean for surgery.
- Restock rooms and treatment area drawers/containers if needed.
- Assist technicians in running morning pre-anesthetic labwork.
GENERAL DAILY DUTIES:
- Keep treatment area, exam rooms and surgery area, neat, clean, and free of hair (sweeping/moping may be necessary). Make sure all these areas are stocked with supplies.
- Assist technicians and doctors with exams, which can include restraining animals for various treatments and sample collection. Preparing ear cytology slides, preparing lab samples for analysis at reference lab, running in house blood or urine analysis.
- Assist doctors in room appointments if a technician is unavailable. Monitor client wait times, help technicians keep appointments running on schedule, assist with getting clients into and out of rooms, to desk, checked out, discharged, to car, etc, displaying excellence in client service as you go.
- Use hands free radio to communicate between other departments particularly the front desk and the treatment area.
- Walk all hospitalized dogs several times during the day and/or as ordered by a doctor.
- Keep all hospital cages and litter boxes clean & record ins/outs on hospital sheets and in computer file.
- Draw up and label vaccine doses (not injectable medications) if needed.
- Following training and Lead Veterinary Technician approval, independently handle technician appointment such as nail trims, anal gland expressions, suture removals, and Bordatella administrations.
- Assist with filling/verifying prescriptions.
- Clean up and autoclave surgical packs and instruments.
- Assist technician in surgery with monitoring patients.
- Demonstrate vigilance in keeping the entire facility and grounds clean by being proactive about picking up litter, feces. Demonstrate initiative by staying busy during slow times by performing cleaning and organizing of work spaces above and beyond typical duties.
EVENING DUTIES: Closing check-list
- Restock all treatment and exam room drawers.
- Make sure all surgical instruments and packs are prepared for the next day, by cleaning, wrapping at autoclaving any used surgery packs.
- Clean, feed and walk all patients if needed as directed by hospital sheets; administer medications only under direct technician or veterinarian approval.
- Turn off x-ray processor and lab equipment.
- Assist with all the end of the day cleaning, trash, sweeping, and daily checklists.
CLIENT SERVICE DUTIES:
- Hospitality: Genuinely welcomes clients and patients and provides for their comfort. Heartily greets them as they arrive, offers bottled water, shows them to waiting area, etc. When speaking with clients, uses their name and the pet’s name when it is proper to do so. Monitors how long clients have been waiting and handles situations where there is an extended wait.
- Client Communication: When directed, answers client questions appropriately in accordance with established hospital guidelines. Accurately answers sub-professional client questions regarding hospital services, fees, and preventative care.
- Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings for continuing education both on basic operations of facility as well as generally veterinary industry knowledge.
- Participate in self-study “homework” assignments given out during meetings in preparation for quizzes over pertinent material.
- Demonstrate initiative to seek knowledge on a continual basis regarding daily duties, operations, and tasks regarding for general work but also to continually “as you go” expand knowledge base about veterinary industry in general.
PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE:
- Adhere to the posted work schedule. Arrive for work promptly and be ready to begin working at the start time. Report to the lead technician in regards to absences, late arrivals, shift trades, and requested time off.
- Utilize the time clock to clock in and out at the beginning and end of each day and during all breaks and lunch breaks. Report to the practice manager if a time punch is missed or needs otherwise to be corrected within the time clock software.
ATTITUDE / TEAMWORK:
- Demonstrate initiative and teamwork in everyday duties by seeking other work to do during slack times, assisting other employees within the practice, and filling in for other employees as needed.
- Demonstrate positive attitude and a “can do” approach to each day, be encouraging to other staff members, and work enthusiastically towards daily goals.
ORGANIZATION / TIME MANAGEMENT:
- Organize work area and exercise time management skills to maximize personal efficiency within the practice. Prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner.
CONTROLS OVER WORK
In accordance with the hospital’s operating instructions, assist providing care required in keeping with the individual needs and circumstances of animals; follow special instructions as issued. Doctors/ technicians provide specific instructions in giving medications, feeding specific diets or following special sanitary procedures if needed during patient stay. Lead Veterinary Technician will have authority over assigned duties, scheduled shifts, and general quality control of care of animals within the facility. Staff member report directly to and are accountable to the Lead Veterinary Technician.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS
- Skills and Knowledge: Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling individual animal temperament. Have ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for treatment.
- Physical Effort: Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently requires handling of materials up to 20 lbs. Additionally, handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs. Walking and/or standing for long periods. Frequently works in a bent position. May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
- Working Conditions: Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required. Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises. Exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes. Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
Definition: “Direct Supervision” means that a task may be performed with verbal authorization by a technician or veterinarian via phone or in person. In this context, medication is not to be administered to a hospitalized patient independent of direct verbal authorization from either a veterinary technician or veterinarian.
