Sustainability Programs Coordinator – Waste Reduction & Diversion

Position Overview:


This full-time position will work with the Sustainability Programs department at Walking Mountains to support community engagement, education, and grant management related to the Waste Reduction & Diversion programs. The position is responsible for promoting waste diversion best practices throughout the community and fulfilling the following responsibilities. Specific tactics will focus on outreach to our Spanish-speaking residents to increase program participation while elevating Walking Mountains' brand visibility throughout Eagle County and beyond. This position will focus on building relationships and creating educational opportunities and information, with the support of the bilingual Sustainability Programs staff, in Spanish for the Latinx population on sustainability and climate change resilience. This position will report to the Sustainability Programs Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Recycling Education & Outreach Project Coordination

  • Grow the “Defensores de Reciclaje” Program - A program dedicated to increasing recycling awareness and interest within disadvantaged communities within the Latinx community with the support of the bilingual Sustainability Programs staff
  • Collaborate with the bilingual Sustainability Programs staff by conducting in-person bilingual surveys, interviews, and focus groups to better understand barriers to recycling. 
  • Use past community data and the report to prioritize neighborhoods for project implementation.Synthesize any new results of the surveys, interviews, and focus groups in a report. 
  • Use the report and past community data to identify solutions and design activities to address the most prominent barriers to recycling.
  • Work with the Waste Reduction & Diversion Team, Latinx community leaders, and the neighborhood Defensores de Reciclaje to develop an inclusive outreach plan that responds to the survey, focus group results, and other community feedback. 
  • Work with the Sustainability Programs Manager and Marketing team to utilize community feedback for bilingual sustainability marketing materials and recycling resources.
  • Support neighborhoods in advocating for additional recycling support and services to their municipality/metro district.
  • Work with the Sustainability Programs Manager and Waste Reduction & Diversion Staff to meet the goals of the Inclusive Community-Based Recycling project.
  • Lead grant implementation tracking and community outreach initiatives related to waste reduction and diversion.
  • Connect with local stakeholders and municipalities to expand recycling initiatives in Eagle County to develop an inclusive, robust, and effective recycling education and outreach program. 
  • Report updates and grant implementation progress with the Senior Director of Grants & Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability Programs Manager.
  • Prepare program updates for contracts, compile annual reporting, and compile participation statistics as needed.


Other Waste Reduction and Diversion Programs

  • Provide expertise and on-site coordination when needed for zero waste events.
  • Collaborate with the Waste Reduction and Diversion Team to provide zero-waste services at 3 Latinx community events annually. Lead pre- and post-event coordination while providing on-site supervision for these community events.
  • Work with the Waste Reduction and Diversion team to create and advocate for inclusive solutions to improve education and outreach around waste diversion for residents, businesses, schools, and governments.
  • Participate in the Materials Management Task Force, leading and helping advance progress on the goals outlined in the Eagle County Climate Action Plan and increasing Latinx CAC involvement.
  • Support program team with the recruitment and training of Sustainability interns when needed. Enforce responsibilities and expectations for the internship position

Communication/ Marketing

  • Work with the Waste Reduction & Diversion Program Staff to provide program descriptions and update content for Walking Mountains publications and website specific to waste diversion as needed.
  • Coordinate program calendars with other Walking Mountains staff for cross-promotion and collaboration on programs and events with synergies.
  • Work with Marketing staff, Sustainability Programs Manager, Senior Programs Director of Sustainability, and interns (as needed) on the creation of new, inclusive educational collateral for the Waste Reduction and Diversion program and related initiatives.
  • Act as a professional representative of Walking Mountains when providing instruction and training.
  • Plan, prepare, and teach other sustainability programs as needed.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, events, and trainings relevant to waste diversion, sustainability, and inclusivity.

Operations and Facilities

  • Assist with ongoing facility operations and organizational special events as needed.
  • Understand and follow the organizational risk management policies and procedures.
  • Act in compliance with the Walking Mountains Employee Handbook.
  • Oversee program resources related to Waste Reduction and Diversion education and outreach programs.


Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with sustainability and waste initiatives, specifically in community education and outreach.
  • Experience with supervising and coordinating staff and volunteers.
  • Professional demeanor to represent Walking Mountains in public.
  • Willingness to expand Spanish-language speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability and stewardship projects for all ages. 
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to communicate with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite. 
  • Ability to work variable hours.
  • Valid driver’s license and able to drive organizational vehicles to offsite locations


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability or a related field.
  • An independently-driven team player who is positive, flexible, and friendly.
  • Experience with Spanish-language speaking.
  • Proficient in grant management and tracking.
  • Experience leading or working zero waste events.


Work Environment:

The responsibility of a Sustainability Programs Coordinator takes place both indoors and outdoors. Time spent outdoors may include in-person waste diversion outreach and tabling at local events and in priority neighborhoods. Time spent indoors in an open office environment at the Borgen Precourt Center for Sustainability maintaining prompt communication across various projects and responsibilities, and appropriate planning.
