 POSITION SUMMARY

The Dean of Students will assist the Head of School in managing the day to day student operations of the school and has overall responsibility for managing the student life side of the school.  This position will be part of the SWCHS leadership team serving as a member of the Executive Cabinet.  Supervisory responsibilities include encouraging and facilitating Christian community, Student Life and Activities, Administrative Leadership, and general Discipleship function of the school.  


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Christian Community

  • Help foster authentic Christian community amongst students, staff, and parents:
    • Daily interaction, encouragement, mentoring, counseling, and discipline of students
    • Daily interaction, encouragement, and support of SWCHS staff
    • Daily interaction, communication, encouragement and support of SWCHS parents
    • Regularly pray for SWCHS students, staff, and parents

Student Life and Activities

  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee student activities and student life:
    • Work with Executive Cabinet to create yearly schedule for student activities and events
    • Assist the Associate Deans (as necessary) to create an effective, engaging Breakout schedule
  • Supervise the Associate Deans in their leadership of the House System, all-school social/community events including dances, senior summits, e-classes, Daring Discussions, FreshStart, etc.
  • Supervise all staff involved in student leadership, student life committees, and clubs.
  • Supervise the planning and administration of the All-School Retreat.
  • Lead the planning and administration of the Senior Missions trip to the Dominican Republic.
  • Lead the planning and administration of the Detroit missions trip.
  • Facilitate and work with the Service Day committee in preparing for the all school Service Days.
  • Facilitate the planning and administration of the annual purchase and distribution of Yondr bags as well as the regular monitoring of their daily use.
  • Facilitate the planning and implementation of the Leadership Academy.
  • Manage student behavior, in concert with the Associate Deans,  to ensure an environment conducive to learning:
    • Develop, maintain and update student handbook as needed
    • Monitor and enforce adherence to school policies
    • Monitor student attendance, including facilitating an effective tardy policy
    • Monitor lunch periods, hallways, and common spaces
    • Conduct routine classroom visits to assess classroom environment and support teachers
    • Communicate to students, staff, and parents all policies and procedures related to student behavior including the procedures for Official Notes within the school site.
  • Implement appropriate and effective disciplinary strategies in accordance with the student handbook and the school’s mission and vision:
    • Supervise the planning and administration of school detentions
    • Communicate with parents in all situations of student discipline
  • Lead the Student Concerns Meetings which monitors students who are struggling with behavior, relationship and/or mental health concerns.
  • Act as the Staff contact and/or supervisor for non-athletic department co-curricular activities and clubs.
  • Effectively manage the Student Life and Dominican Republic Missions trip budgets.

Administrative Leadership

  • Effectively communicate the school’s mission and vision to prospective families.
  • Participate as a member of the Head of School’s Executive Cabinet.
  • Supervise and support the Associate Dean of Students.
  • Supervise and support the SWCHS Nurse staff.
  • Supervise and support the Director of Spiritual Formation.
  • Lead the Graduation/Baccalaureate Committee, the associated event rehearsals and the budget.
  • Lead the creation and distribution of the annual school calendar, the staff Daily Calendar, and the student/staff lunch calendar.
  • Create, manage and communicate unique class schedules and manage/update the school bell system software for special school days as needed.
  • Participate as a member of the admission interview team.
  • Participate in all-school events such as Back to School Night, Admission Open Houses, etc.
  • Facilitate student assignments for and the end of year clean-out and return of lockers.
  • Participate in strategic planning and implementation of the Safety Team for SWCHS.
  • Assist in the development and administration of the Emergency Safety Plan:
    • Determine the process for and the dates of regular Fire, Tornado,  and Lock-Down Drills
    • Serve as the staff advisor, along with the Director of Operations, for the SWCHS Emergency Safety Team
  • Participate in annual networking and round table meetings with local Christian school administrators.
  • Serve as the back-up Designated School Official for SEVIS.

Teaching

  • Teach part-time in certified areas as needed.

Additional Duties

  • Lead a Student Discipleship Group.
  • Encourage the SWCHS Christian community through staff devotions and prayer.
  • Make initial assignments of incoming freshmen and transfer students into D-groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
  • Submit a bi-annual report to the Board of Education, as directed by the Head of School.
Requirements

 JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, education, ministry or relevant field.  
  • 5+ years  business, administration, teaching or related experience.
  • Demonstrate administrative gifts and experience, with ability to attend to many projects and details simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presenting to large groups.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, combined with creativity, initiative and innovation.
  • Ability and openness to work day and/or evening hours as needed to meet school needs.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Google environment.
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential, sensitive information. 

Spiritual Qualities:

  • Christian faith; demonstrated character of integrity; solid knowledge of God’s Word; vibrant and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Actively participate in a local Bible-believing church. 
  • Acknowledge Christ as Savior and seek to live his/her life as His disciple; evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in dealing with people.
  • Believe the Bible to be the inspired, only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God, and our standard for faith and practice; actively support the school’s Statement of Faith.
  • Demonstrate a desire for spiritual growth as evidenced by his/her prayer life, Bible study, and spiritual outreach.
  • Be a Christian role model in attitude, speech, and actions toward others. This includes being committed to God’s biblical standards for sexual conduct (Luke 6:40).
