The Salt Lake Tribune is seeking a Development Specialist to help expand its groundbreaking nonprofit news model to communities across Utah. Since its founding in 1871, The Tribune has served as Utah’s independent voice for news and information. In 2019, we were the first legacy news organization in the United States to become a nonprofit and we are helping lead a movement to build sustainable business models for local news.
The Development Specialist will join The Tribune’s three-person development team and will touch all aspects of building this nonprofit model for local news. The development team oversees all philanthropic giving for The Tribune and The Moab Times-Independent, which was acquired by The Tribune in 2023. This work ranges from small dollar to major gifts and grants to corporate donations. Moving forward, as The Tribune expands its presence in Cache Valley and southern Utah, this position will be focused on development beyond the Wasatch Front. This role will manage small dollar giving in these communities and will also work closely with the Chief Development Officer and Development Director on building corporate and major gifts in these communities.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, highly organized, and have an interest in understanding the business of news and have knowledge of the nonprofit community in Utah They will enjoy building relationships with donors and have strong communication skills.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have excellent organizational skills demonstrated in meeting deadlines, setting priorities and maintaining accuracy in details. They should be comfortable working in a cooperative but self-directed manner and in a dynamic and evolving industry. They should have a thorough understanding of the work The Tribune does and an interest in, and passion for, media.
Additionally, they should have:
- Proficiency with Salesforce, or a comparable database;
- Strong writing skills with a focus on marketing and sales communications;
- Mastery of Excel, Google Applications, and related softwares;
- Experience in deck creation;
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
- Be comfortable attending events and speaking with donors and prospects
The is a hybrid position with a central location available of Salt Lake City, St. George, Moab, or Logan. A minimum of quarterly travel within Utah will be required.

Responsibilities include:
Donor relations
- Acting as the primary point of contact for small dollar donors outside of the Wasatch Front, including developing and managing stewardship plans and troubleshooting email and phone queries;
- Prospecting, acquiring, and stewarding potential donors, including mid major and corporate donors in communities beyond the Wasatch Front;
- Assisting in project management of small dollar campaigns, including managing list creation, asset deadlines, interdepartmental needs, and print mailing (both in-house and in partnership with a mail house);
- Assisting with strategic communication writing;
- Managing donor benefits and gifts;
Database
- Working with Wasatch Front team in managing departmental databases including data hygiene and processing donations into CRM database from mail, third-party platforms and donor-advised funds.
Grants
- Project managing grant opportunities, including research, maintaining a grant calendar, and managing applications;
- Assisting with grant writing.
Events
- Comfortable planning and executing events
- Some nights and weekend work is expected
Additional departmental project management, including weekly and monthly reporting needs, and assistance on development events.
