Position Title: Driver; Flex Route/Dial-a-Ride Service
Title of this Position’s Supervisor: Operations Manager
Job Purpose or Scope: Safely operate small & large transit type vans or buses for use on route service, paratransit and senior transportation.
Major Responsibilities: List in order of importance
- Reports to work on time and in proper dress code. Drives route safely in a timely manner. Maintains a strong attendance record.
- Possesses or can obtain a CDL class B or better with a good driving record. Must pass a pre-employment drug test and a DOT Medical exam.
- Act professionally and show an ability to maintain good customer relations with the public, regardless of race, gender, age, religion, disability or sexual orientation, as well as other categories. Remain courteous under stressful conditions.
- Communicate clearly and effectively and be able to use 2 way radio to keep dispatch informed of route issues, including detours, construction delays road obstructions, passenger or mechanical problems.
- Has full range of senses (sight, hearing and speech) to facilitate communication with the public and for safe operation of the assigned vehicle, including a pre-trip inspection per company standards.
- Has manual dexterity for operating the bus and securing mobility devices (including the ability to kneel, stoop, crouch or bend as needed to secure 4 point tie-down and shoulder restraint).
- Handle bus or van passes, ensuring cash is put into fare boxes and able to handle all paperwork associated with the job.
- Maintains the cleanliness of vehicles.
- Do a thorough pre trip at the start of day and post-trip and end of day. Sweeps and cleans the bus as necessary and checks for items left behind by passengers throughout the day.
- Ensure that passengers understand and obey the rules of the bus and when necessary deal with problem passengers.
- Able to safely maneuver the bus in confined spaces in the parking area and on city streets.
- Provide door-to-door assisted service for Dial-a-ride passengers. Door-through-door service for PACE passengers.
Normal amount of decision making for driving on public roadways. Compliance with local and state traffic laws. Enforce passenger compliance with rules.
Minimum Education & Certifications Required:
- Possess or can obtain a CDL license with required endorsements.
Experience & Skills Required:
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Must have maintained a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two years.
- The ability to work early morning hours or late afternoon hours.
- Must be able to work without direct supervision.
- Must read and understand street signs, route sheets and maps.
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to verbally communicate with passengers and dispatchers/road supervisors including use of a two-way radio and PA system.
- Able to work shift hours and days assigned.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions (include amount of travel):
- Ability to successfully complete DOT physical and ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Availability to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays
- Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality
- Physical fitness allowing inspections of all transit vehicles, boarding transit vehicles, moving between facilities and vehicles
Physical requirements include:
- Pushing/Pulling - Opening service door, emergency door, hood, steering, windows, applying service & parking brake, adjusting mirrors, wheelchairs, walkers
- Lifting - Hood, trash box, passenger into their seats, wheel chocks, tire chains, maneuvering wheel chairs and assistive devices, emergency equipment. Up to 25 lbs.
- Walking - Crossing lot, up and down aisle, around exterior of bus
- Sitting - Up to 2-3 hours while driving
- Climbing - Steps in and out of bus, cleaning windshield, under hood inspection
- Reaching - Under hood inspection, cleaning windows, applying tie-downs, safety vests, car seats, adjust mirrors, opening emergency door from ground, checking roof hatch, applying service brake, clutch and accelerator
- Handling - Doors, knobs, switches, handles, wheelchairs, walkers/canes
- Hearing - Detecting problems with passengers on bus, emergency vehicles, unusual engine noises
- Bending/Stooping/Squatting - Pre-trip inspection, applying tie-downs, sweeping, checking for passengers and items
- Seeing - Driving, reading street signs, route sheets
- Talking - Effective communication with passengers and dispatch
- Dropping - From emergency door to ground
