The East Smithfield Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and forward-thinking individual to join our team as a Youth Services Librarian. Working under the direction of the Head of Youth Services, this part-time position is 20 hours per week, including evening and Saturday hours. As a Youth Services Librarian, you'll promote and strengthen library services for children and young adults through engagement, advisement, and development of resources and programming.
Salary & Benefits
- $17.00-$26.00/hour based on education & experience

Major Areas of Responsibility
- Oversees the children’s rooms and fosters a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all library users.
- Serves as an engaging and visible presence for children, young adults and families.
- Provides readers’ advisory and reference services to all patrons.
- Compiles bibliographies and instructional materials to meet the needs of children and young adults.
- Plans and facilitates programs for children and young adults; tracks and reports on related data.
- Assists with outreach to local schools and community organizations.
- Performs opening/closing duties.
- Supervises volunteers who work in youth services.
Core Job Functions
- Helps children and young adults access a wide range of resources (print and electronic).
- Assists with Library displays and exhibits, shelves materials as needed.
- Facilitates weekly program offerings, including story time, book groups, etc.
- Contributes to the development and execution of the youth summer reading program.
- Creates promotional materials for programs and events; contributes to our monthly newsletter.
- Develops and maintains professional and personal skills by keeping current with library trends and seeking out professional development opportunities.
- Exhibits flexibility and willingness to help in other areas of the library as needed (ex: covering circulation desks)
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program in Library Science preferred, bachelor's degree is required. GSLIS students are encouraged to apply.
- Experience working with children and young adults is preferred.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 tools.
- Working knowledge of Koha/Aspen and LibCal are desirable.
- Experience with graphic design (Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.)
- Adaptive and effective communicator (verbal and written) to support a diverse audience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Reports to the Head of Youth Services.
- Available to work evenings and Saturdays.
- Physical demands: ability to occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds.
