St. John’s Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 organization that exclusively supports the identity, mission, and vision of St. John’s Lutheran Ministries, also known as St. John’s United. The Foundation’s sole member is St. John’s United, which is owned by 24 Lutheran Congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). St. John’s Foundation is led by a 15-member volunteer Board of Directors, which is appointed by the St. John’s United governing board. The Foundation President reports to the Foundation Board and the Chief Executive Officers of St. John’s United. St. John’s was incorporated in 1960 and opened its doors to the first residents in November of 1963. In 1993, the Foundation was created to support the growing need for resources to serve those at the margins. With the Foundation’s support, St. John’s has now grown to be the largest senior living provider in the State of Montana. In 2023, St. John’s provided direct service to 2,309 seniors. Through SJU family services, including childcare, family crisis support, adoptions, and foster support, 253 families were impacted in 2023. St. John’s is a diverse ministry guided by our compelling mission to provide living opportunities within nurturing environments of hope, dignity, and love. Our ministries span the State of Montana, and our employed and affiliated staff number over 725. St. John’s United oversees $50M in operating revenue, and the Foundation itself has $17M in assets.
Purpose of the Position:
- Provide philanthropic and management leadership in the operations of the St. John’s Foundation.
- Promote and inspire philanthropic action that enhances St. John’s United.
- Advance the mission of St. John’s United: To provide living opportunities within nurturing environments of hope, dignity, and love.
Summary:
Subject to the Foundation Board of Directors and St. John’s United CEO, the President is responsible for the operations of the Foundation, including but not limited to:
- Day-to-day administration, including management of an annually approved operating budget.
- Employment selection, management, and discharge of employees.
- Development and maintenance of policies and practices.
- Supervision of programs, projects, and campaigns.
- Maintenance of records, investment information, documents, database, and software systems.
- Performance of duties consistent with the bylaws of the St. John’s Foundation and St. John’s United.
Essential Job Functions
Leadership and Management
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the Foundation’s mission and goals.
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the Foundation staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Board Relations: Work closely with the Foundation Board of Directors, providing them with the necessary information and support to make informed decisions.
- Policy Development: Establish and maintain policies and procedures to ensure effective and efficient operations.
Fundraising and Development
- Fundraising Strategy: Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies including endowment, capital, and annual fund campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, and special events.
- Donor Relations: Cultivate and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors, ensuring timely and meaningful recognition of their contributions.
- Grant Management: Oversee the solicitation of meaningful grant opportunities and ensure required documentation and reporting requirements are fulfilled.
Financial Management
- Budget Oversight: Manage the Foundation’s budget, ensuring financial stability and accountability.
- Investment Management: Oversee the investment of the Foundation’s funds, working with investment managers to ensure proper stewardship of resources.
- Financial Reporting: Provide regular financial reports to the Foundation Board of Directors and other stakeholders.
Communication and Public Relations
- Public Relations: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Foundation, representing it to the public, media, and other stakeholders.
- Publications: Oversee the production of the Foundation’s publications, including Echoes, E- newsletters, annual reports, and other communications.
- Website and social media: Maintain and update the Foundation’s website and social media platforms to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination.
Program Management
- Program Oversight: Supervise the development and implementation of Foundation programs and initiatives.
- Volunteer Coordination: Ensure the recruitment, training, and engagement of volunteers to support missional needs throughout St. John’s United.
- Event Planning: Plan and execute fundraising and community events to promote the Foundation’s mission and engage supporters.
Collaboration and Community Engagement
- Partnership Development: Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders.
- Advocacy: Advocate for the Foundation’s mission and programs within the community and beyond.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with various stakeholders, including the voting members of the St. John’s corporation, ownership congregations, and regional partners.
Qualifications
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in business administration, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Social Services or a related field. A master’s degree or life experience equivalent is considered.
Experience:
- Significant experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, or a related field, typically 5-10 years.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising and development activities.
- Experience in leadership roles, managing teams, and working with boards of directors.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent presentation and speaking skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners.
- Strategic planning and organizational skills.
- Financial acumen, including budget management and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in using fundraising software and other relevant technology.
