Houston Racquet Club is seeking an experienced, energetic, and hands-on A La Carte Sous Chef to help lead our Grill Kitchen and deliver outstanding dining experiences to our members and guests.

This is more than just a cooking position—it's an opportunity to be part of a collaborative culinary team that takes pride in quality, creativity, and hospitality.

What You'll Do

As our A La Carte Sous Chef, you'll play a key leadership role in the daily operation of The Grill Kitchen by:

  • Leading and supervising line cooks during service
  • Ensuring exceptional food quality, consistency, and presentation
  • Managing daily kitchen production and execution
  • Maintaining recipe, portion, and plating standards
  • Monitoring inventory levels and assisting with ordering
  • Upholding the highest standards of sanitation, food safety, and organization
  • Training, mentoring, and developing kitchen team members
  • Assisting with menu specials and culinary innovation
  • Supporting banquet and club-wide culinary operations when needed
  • Stepping into leadership roles when the Executive Chef or Executive Sous Chef are unavailable

Requirements

 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Culinary degree or formal culinary training preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive culinary experience, preferably in a private club, fine dining, hotel, or upscale restaurant environment.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen operations.
  • Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and HACCP principles.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

  • Lifting and carrying: Up to 50 pounds occasionally

Work Requirements

  • Exposure to hot surfaces, ovens, grills, and cooking equipment
  • Frequent exposure to wet and humid conditions
  • Exposure to moving mechanical kitchen equipment
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, including walk-in coolers and freezers
  • Occasional outdoor exposure during Club events
  • Moderate noise levels typical of a commercial kitchen environment
