JOB SUMMARY
The Literacy Associate works in the Literacy Center in the Redding branch of Shasta Public Libraries. The Literacy Associate is responsible for performing a range of receptionist, clerical and administrative tasks to support tutors, learners, the Literacy Coordinator, and daily operations in an office setting.
Because the Literacy Associate works closely with learners, tutors, and the general public, a customer-oriented approach is essential. An ideal candidate will be friendly and have good people skills, while also having the ability to prioritize tasks and stay organized.
Employment Type: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours Per Week: 20
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 9am to 1pm or Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Answer the phones, taking messages, and responding to questions about the program.
- Greet people as they come in to the literacy center and provide general support and explain the program to visitors
- Organize and schedule appointments and meetings
- Set up weekly schedules for learners and tutors to meet in the library
- Conduct learner interviews/intakes
- Assist in the preparation of regularly scheduled reports
- Filing program-related forms and reports
- Maintain communication and contact lists
- Act as a point of contact for learners and tutors in the program
- Help plan and organize events
- Use a computer to write and distribute email, correspondence memos, letters, faxes, and track data from the program.
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- A high school diploma or equivalent. (Preferred A.A.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong communication and people skills
- Proficiency in MS Office and Google Suites
- Working knowledge of office equipment, like printers, scanners, and computers
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
- Ability to work independently or on a team as needed

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location, lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
