The Opportunity
The Managing Director of Philanthropy will lead the comprehensive fundraising program for Women's Lunch Place (WLP), overseeing a team of eight development professionals and managing a coordinated strategy across major gifts, annual giving, corporate and volunteer engagement, and foundation relations. The incumbent will be responsible for a current philanthropic portfolio of $6M+ annually – anticipated to double in the near term – while carrying their own portfolio of major gift prospects ($50K+) and providing strategic leadership to expand WLP's overall philanthropic capacity.
This position joins WLP at a pivotal moment as the organization advances through the quiet phase of an ambitious fundraising campaign. The Managing Director will play an instrumental role in designing and executing the campaign strategy while ensuring the continued growth and success of WLP's annual fundraising programs. They will serve as a key partner to the CEO and work closely with the Board of Directors and Development Committee to advance WLP's mission and vision.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished development professional with demonstrated success in major gift fundraising and team leadership. They bring a sophisticated understanding of best practices across all areas of development and the ability to mentor and grow talent while fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability. The Managing Director must be an exceptional relationship builder who can effectively engage with donors, board members, and colleagues at all levels.
Base Pay: $150,000/yr
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Management
- Lead WLP's development team including four direct reports, providing mentorship, direction, and professional development opportunities
- Partner with the CPO to set and achieve ambitious fundraising goals
- Design and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies across all revenue streams
- Ensure integration and collaboration among development units
- Drive campaign planning and execution
- Establish metrics and reporting systems to track progress and success
- Oversee key volunteer groups e.g. boards and committees
2. Major Gifts Program
- Manage a personal portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects ($50K+)
- Oversee prospect strategy development and portfolio management across the team
- Lead cultivation and solicitation of major, principal, and/or transformational gifts
- Partner with board members and volunteers on donor engagement
- Ensure excellent donor stewardship and recognition
3. Team & Program Oversight
- Supervise and support the Directors of:
o Major Gifts
o Annual Giving
o Corporate & Volunteer Engagement
o Foundation Relations
- Ensure coordination and integration of fundraising activities
- Drive innovation and best practices across all development functions
- Oversee development operations, including budget management and team resources
4. External Relations & Communications
- Serve as an organizational ambassador and spokesperson
- Partner with Communications team on donor-facing materials and messaging
- Represent WLP at external events and in the community
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and partners
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
- 7-10 years of progressive development experience, including major gifts
- 5+ years of staff management experience
- Proven track record of closing six-figure gifts
- Campaign planning and execution experience
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Experience with donor databases and standard office technologies
- Strong analytical and strategic planning abilities
- Excellent project management and organizational skills
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in social services or related nonprofit sector
- Knowledge of the Greater Boston philanthropic community
- Background in women's issues or gender-based services
- Campaign experience in organizations with $5M+ annual fundraising
