Purpose: The Upper School English Instructor is an innovative master teacher and collaborator with a solid background in and passion for teaching Upper School English, utilizing a strong repertoire of tools for teaching students to read closely, think critically, and write in a variety of modes. This teacher will help students read with understanding by providing strategies for engaging with a variety of texts in many genres, both fiction and nonfiction. The successful candidate will create a classroom with opportunities to use writing as a means of discovery and to lead students in their honing of skills in creative expression, communication, and collaboration. This teacher is also a lifelong learner who welcomes opportunities for professional development and collegial conversation that lead to the development of effective, inquiry-based education in the English classroom.
Essential Functions:
- Teach Upper School English, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Mission.
- Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as an academic advisor.
- Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach.
- Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels.
- Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty-first century global classroom.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives.
Abuse Risk Management Standards:
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
- Attends required abuse risk-management training.
- Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
- Follows mandated abuse-reporting requirements.
Working Environment:
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
- Generally 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions.
- Generally hazard free environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in English—Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum three years of experience as an Upper School English teacher.
- Proficiency in educational technology and current pedagogical research and practices.
- Commitment to participate broadly in the life of the school.
- Effective interpersonal skills; specifically for interacting with students and faculty members.
- Demonstrated record of effectively differentiating instruction and using instructional technology.
- Experience with school change and ongoing, immersive teacher collaboration.
- Innovative, flexible thinking to meet student needs in a mission-centered classroom.
- Prior experience working with Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate curriculum and objectives preferred.
