SUMMARY

Camp SunSparrow Counselors are responsible for providing leadership support to Camp SunSparrow leadership as it pertains to SunSparrow volunteers and campers. This position requires servant-leadership in the areas of spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical needs of counselors, campers, and volunteers (high school-adult). In this position, Counselors are expected to maintain an environment of professionalism, safety, and fun. Overnight stay in camp lodging is essential for this position.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Have ability and desire to disciple and supervise Camp SunSparrow volunteers, as well as campers.
  2. Keep Camp SunSparrow volunteers accountable in performing their ministry via teaching, training, coaching and supporting.
  3. Maintain healthy staff and volunteer relations through exercising principles of love, forgiveness, reproof, and honest communication.
  4. Maintain an atmosphere of love, openness, and care among staff, volunteers, and campers.
  5. Assist Team Leaders in the supervision, organization, and implementation of evening volunteer programming.
  6. Maintain cleanliness, neatness, and orderliness of camp facility before, during and upon each day end of camp.
  7. Assist SunSparrow Team Leaders in camp activities and functions such as: crafts, morning recreation, pool, and mini golf, train rides, campfires and circle-ups, music, chapel, and skits.
  8. Work cooperatively with fellow SunSparrow staff and leadership for the establishment of a friendly, open atmosphere for campers, parents, staff, and volunteers. 
  9. Be willing and able to replace or supplement staff and volunteer team members in an emergency
  10. Oversee camper and volunteer eating habits and needs, facilitate lunchtime.
  11. Participate in and provide leadership support to staff and volunteers during orientation meetings, and other camp functions.
  12. Possess ability to communicate with and lead high school, college age and adult staff and volunteers in their various camp activities and responsibilities; provide necessary instruction to the staff, volunteers, and campers.
  13. Be a positive role model for the staff, volunteers and campers in his/her spiritual walk, self-respect, love, and consideration of others, enthusiasm, and work ethic.
  14. Camper care and support (ie. Toileting, dressing, feeding and the like) *Some duties only to be performed by staff members ages 18+.
  15. Organize, delegate, and be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of restrooms, dining areas, activity stations, and surrounding areas utilized by Camp SunSparrow participants.
  16. Obey and enforce all camp safety rules and regulations.
  17. Report information regarding unusual behaviors, rule infractions, medical issues, etc. to a SunSparrow Team Leader and to the Developmental Disabilities Ministries Coordinator daily (immediately if emergency).
  18. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Camp SunSparrow Team Leader is responsible for supervising volunteer Small Group Leaders and Hospitality Team Members.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous work experience in a camp setting is also preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  1. Current CPR/First-Aid certification. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of campers, staff/volunteers, and parents.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, run, and jump on level and uneven ground; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to transfer campers from wheelchairs to toilets or swimming pools and assist in cleaning or dressing campers. These abilities are necessary to help the Counselor protect the safety of campers while they are involved in various camp activities may be made to enable qualified individuals.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.


ON-CAMP HOUSING CONDITION

The employee in this position is required to live on the camp premises in camp housing in order to provide round-the-clock supervision of volunteers.

$360-$410/wk
