Director of Pharmacy

Job Summary:      

Under the supervision of the hospital administration, the director of pharmacy perform all duties necessary to oversee the effective daily operation of departmental services and programs. Director is responsible for oversight of all aspects of pharmaceutical care throughout the hospital including safe drug distribution and security; appropriate medication selection and use; and collaboration with healthcare providers and ancillary staff. Director acts as superviser to staff pharmacists, technicians, students, and intern in all work areas as assigned. All activities must be performed in accordance with established policies and procedures along with federal and state laws and regulations.

Responsibilities: 

  • Oversees and adjusts all workflow, space and systems processes as needed to meet operational requirements 
  • Monitors, analyzes and reports on established performance metrics on a regular basis 
  • Works closely with administration and pharmacy staff to ensure that all information systems are operational, and accurate this includes implementation of and transition to new systems and integration with existing systems 
  • Participates in staff meetings, planning meetings and other meetings as needed 
  • Provides regular consultation for clients and staff regarding medication and assures that all other dispensing pharmacists provide regular consultation for clients 
  • Actively participates as a member and chair of the Medication Safety Committee 
  • Works closely with hospital faculty to develop and oversee Pharmacist educational program including direct supervision of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Interns, Pharmacy Technicians and other students as their activities relate to the function of the pharmacy 
  • Provide oversight of Medication Therapy Management Program.  
  • Oversees the work of all pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and clerks including recruiting, hiring, disciplinary action, scheduling, team building, performance evaluation 
  • Assures that all pharmacy staff are appropriately trained to perform necessary functions 
  • Ensures compliance with all licensure and governing body requirements including, but not limited to: Board of Pharmacy, JCAHO, FDA, and DEA. 
  • Ensures compliance with all contractual requirements of payers 
  • Ensures compliance with wholesale purchasing agreement(s) and maintains close contact with vendor(s) for ordering, inventory and billing purposes 
  • Ensures that all licensed pharmacy staff meet all licensure requirements including continuing education and recertification 
  • Works with the Quality Assurance Director to develop and implement regular monitoring of quality indicators including but not limited to medication errors and client satisfaction;  
  • Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer/Chief Operation Officer and other senior staff and outside consultants to develop and manage comprehensive business plan for the Pharmacy including analysis of potential business opportunities, anticipated margins, forecasts of future sales and performance metrics 
  • Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer/Chief Operation Officer and other Managers to maintain and develop all vendor and payer contracts 
  • Responsible for managing the operational budget of the Pharmacy in conjunction with other staff and managers 
  • Assures that all charges are accurately recorded and monitored 
  • Complete all required ongoing hospital education and licensure continuing education requirements.  
  • Collaborate with other pharmacists on task completion and training of new pharmacy employees. 
  • Understand and comply with all hospital-wide policies and procedures. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.   
Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Must be graduate of an accredited pharmacy college recognized by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE). 
  • Prior hospital pharmacy management experience preferred or completion of accredited American Society of Health System Pharmacists residency preferred, but not required. 
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ohio Board of Pharmacy license to practice pharmacy. 
  • Experience in unit dose distribution and IV admixture. 
  • Current Healthcare Worker BLS and ACLS certification preferred.

  • Pharmaceutical knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to all patient and age populations. 
  • Ability to act independently and analyze information accurately.

  • Clear and effective verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills. 
  • Strong computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and hospital electronic database and programs. 
  • Highly motivated and willing to assume additional jobs and duties as needed.  
  • Flexible to accommodate for needs during accreditation surveys, inspections, or other unscheduled events. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Frequent sitting 3-6 hours per day 
  • Frequent standing 3-6 hours per day 
  • Occasional hand and wrist deviations (side to side and up and down) 3-6 hours per day 
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance 
  • Close eye work with normal color discrimination 
  • Occasional (<3 hours per day) exposure to hazardous chemicals (ex. Latex) or infections 
  • Frequent (3-6 hours per day) handling of hazardous and non-hazardous drug products
