The Patient Collection Specialist is responsible for performing day-to-day follow-up on outstanding patient accounts receivable. Day-to-day activities may include all or some of the essential functions listed below depending upon individual experience / knowledge and the needs of the organization which are subject to change from time to time.
Responsibilities
- Utilizes the practice management system to perform follow-up on assigned outstanding patient accounts receivables. Those receivables would include self-pay patients that do not have insurance and owe TOA a remaining balance that was not collected up front at time of service and any remaining patient responsibility after insurance has been billed for those patients that do have insurance; such as, copays, deductibles and coinsurance balances that were not collecting prior to treatment or had additional monies applied to the patient after insurance was filed.
- Adhere to best practice standards in performing day-to-day follow-up tasks.
- Place phone calls to patients in an attempt to obtain payment, establish acceptable payment arrangements, and/or to acquire information necessary to receive payment from insurance or other sources.
- Maintains strict confidentiality with regarding to protected health information (PHI) and understands and adheres to TOA’s HIPAA privacy and security policies and procedures.
- Assists with a variety of projects and perform other duties as assigned.
- Must reside in the Middle TN, Columbia, or Knoxville area.
- 1+ years of experience handling physician accounts receivable duties and/or certificate as a certified collector.
- Must be willing to take a course through the American Collectors Association to become a certified collector, if not already certified.
- Must have experience reading and understanding payer remittance advices. This Includes the ability to differentiate between allowed charges, contractual adjustments, line-item denials / reasons, patient responsibility (co-pay, co-insurance, and deductibles), bundled payments, etc.
- Must be able to meet average expectations for productivity and quality standards.
- Requires ability to organize and prioritize day-to-day tasks to keep work assignments current.
- Prefer candidates that are proficient in utilizing MS-Excel for analyzing data using basic formulas, pivot tables, and charts.
Typical Physical Demands
Position requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment is required. Employee must have normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.
Typical Working Conditions
Position functions within a normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required in order to fulfill assigned duties as dictated by fluctuations in workload volumes and/or staffing vacancies.
