Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to advancing civil rights and racial and economic justice, as well as to amplifying the power of our clients through comprehensive legal advocacy. Founded on and strengthened by a pro bono legal service model, our staff and volunteers seek justice through direct legal services, promote healthy and resilient communities through education and outreach, and support community-led efforts to transform unjust systems through litigation and policy advocacy in and beyond Los Angeles.


Public Counsel operates eight legal projects: Child, Youth & Family Advocacy, Community Development, Consumer Rights & Economic Justice, Homelessness Prevention, Immigrants’ Rights, Veterans’ Advancement, Gender Justice, and our impact litigation project, Opportunity Under Law. 


Public Counsel has a full-time staff of approximately 160. POSITION OVERVIEW


Public Counsel seeks a Digital Media Coordinator to help elevate and strengthen the organization’s online presence and digital communications. Reporting to the Communications Director, the Digital Media Coordinator will manage social media channels, update and enhance the organization’s website, support graphic design needs, and help develop effective digital strategies that reflect Public Counsel’s mission and values. This role is critical to building our brand visibility, engaging supporters, and amplifying our direct services, advocacy campaigns, and civil rights litigation.


We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about the power of digital communications to advance economic and racial justice and support a mission-driven nonprofit. The Digital Media Coordinator will be detail-oriented and bring innovative ideas for leveraging the evolving capabilities of digital media. This role is an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to make a meaningful impact in Los Angeles and beyond. The position is hybrid, requiring one in-person office day per week, along with occasional support for in-person and virtual events during evenings and weekends.


ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Social Media Management

  • Manage organizational social media accounts to ensure consistent brand presence and messaging, engage partner   organizations, and elevate the organization’s online profile.
  • Plan and execute digital media strategies to grow and engage Public Counsel’s digital audience, advance advocacy campaigns, and support fundraising efforts.
  • Create compelling, timely, and audience-specific social media posts, including live coverage of events and initiatives, breaking news, and organizational victories.

Website Posting & Management

  •  Maintain and update website content, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  •  Collaborate with team members to develop landing pages, blog posts, and campaign-specific web content.
  •  Monitor site analytics, track key metrics, and recommend improvements to enhance user experience.

Graphic Design & Multimedia

  • Design and produce visual assets (e.g., infographics, memes, digital ads) to support social media campaigns, newsletters, and website content.
  • Assist with basic video and photo editing to create engaging content for various digital platforms.
  • Maintain brand consistency across all visual and multimedia materials.

Digital Content Creation & Strategy

  • Write engaging copy for multiple platforms (blogs, email blasts, social media, and publications) tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate on the development and execution of digital outreach and marketing strategies to advance organizational campaigns, projects, and litigation efforts.
  • Track, analyze, and report on digital communications performance (e.g., social media engagement, web traffic) to inform and refine future strategies.

Communications & Event Support

  • Help to manage the editorial content calendar, mapping out social media, blog posts, and other digital content in collaboration with the team.
  • Collaborate with the database manager to identify and segment key audiences, develop targeted messaging, and expand Public Counsel’s supporter base.
  • Support special event communications, including online fundraising campaigns and other development initiatives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in digital media, social media management, communications, or a related field (nonprofit or social justice experience preferred).
  • Proficiency in managing social media platforms and familiarity with related analytic tools.
  • Experience working with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and basic HTML knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to create visually appealing graphics for daily social media use, primarily using Canva. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt writing style for various audiences and platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement values-driven messaging that resonates with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute successful social media campaigns, including developing detailed work plans and measuring impact.
  • Commitment to advancing justice for immigrants, veterans, nonprofits, renters, families, and other communities we serve, and   a demonstrated understanding of issues affecting low-income communities and communities of color. Work experience in these areas preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Spanish language fluency preferred.
  • Video editing or animation skills preferred.
Requirements

JOB TYPE AND BENEFITS

  • Full-time/non-exempt
  • Salary range/Hourly rate: $68,243.93 - $85,601.07 ($34.99 - $43.90 per hour)
  • Bargaining
  • Probationary period: 6 Months

  • Up to 60 hours of compensatory time per calendar year (for exempt staff only)

PUBLIC COUNSEL VACCINATION POLICY AND COVID-19 PROTOCOLS


Public Counsel requires vaccination against COVID-19 for all employees, including new hires. Public Counsel is generally office-based, but remote work has been permitted during the pandemic. All employees with Public Counsel are required to work in the office at least one day per week, at the discretion of the head of department. Some positions require additional in-office days. This policy is subject to redesign by leadership. Public Counsel will work in a manner consistent with public health and local and state emergency orders.
