Description

City Theatre Company (LORT D), Pittsburgh’s leading professional theater dedicated to new plays, is currently accepting résumés for the position of House Manager/Bartender. This seasonal, part-time position requires evening and weekend availability during performance dates.


Employees filling this seasonal role will be working both House Manager and/or Bartending shifts as assigned, depending on staffing level requirements and scheduling. This position begins immediately, with hours averaging between 10 to 20 per performance week. The anticipated season end date is late June 2025, with the potential of further work pending performance schedule.


Excellent customer service skills are required as our Front of House staff are considered the ambassadors between the patrons and City Theatre. As such, the relationships between staff and patron are vital to the success of the organization.

Requirements

Principle House Manger responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Greet patrons entering the theatre.
  • Answer questions and provide information regarding City Theatre and upcoming performances and events.
  • Managing a team of volunteer Ushers (up to eight individuals) and facilitating the pre-performance Usher meeting.
  • Maintaining close communication with both Box Office and Stage Management to ensure prompt start of the performance.
  • Continuing constant communication via headset with Stage Management during the performance to address patron concerns.
  • Seating late patrons and reseating patrons who exit mid-performance.
  • Occasional cleaning of public spaces and restocking restroom facilities supplies.
  • Completion and distribution of a House Manager Report for each shift documenting details of the performance.
  • Securing and locking the building and utilizing the security system at the end of the shift.
  • Learn and engage with each production by both reading and seeing performances (staff will be provided with free opportunities to see all performances in City Theatre’s main season).
  • Understanding of City Theatre’s accessible programs (ASL Interpretation, Audio Description, Open Caption).

Principle Bartender responsibilities and duties includes, but are not limited to:

  • Greeting patrons entering the Lounge.
  • Answer questions and provide information regarding City Theatre and upcoming performances and events.
  • Processing cash and credit card sales through the point-of-sale system (Square Register).
  • Preparing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for patrons: i.e. beer, wine, simple mixed drinks, soft drinks, coffee, tea.
  • Checking patron IDs per Pennsylvania State Liquor Control guidelines.
  • Cashing out and closing sales drawer in conjunction with completing a nightly sales report.
  • Restocking concession and bar supplies.
  • Cleaning of the bar, lounge tables, and restrooms as needed.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Basic bar knowledge and cash-handling experience is preferred but not required – training will be provided by Patron Services Manager and Director of Ticketing & Patron Services.
  • The ability to multitask – most commonly answering customer inquiries while performing other duties.
  • The ability to communicate thoughtfully and professionally about solutions, capacities, and needs on both a departmental and personal level.
  • The capacity to manage a high volume of customer traffic.
  • The propensity to use independent judgement when working with customers.
  • The ability to work flexible hours based on a performance calendar.
  • Strong organizational skills and working with a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) is welcomed; training assistance will be made available.
  • Proof of current certification of Pennsylvania’s Responsible Alcohol Management Program (R.A.M.P.) or the ability to complete an online R.A.M.P. training course withing 30 days of hire. Training costs are paid by City Theatre.
  • Position requires physical demands such as:
  • Frequently moving between multiple buildings on City Theatre’s campus
  • Navigating stairs
  • The ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Standing in a stationary position for extended periods

Reporting & Compensation:

The position reports directly to the Patron Services Manager with supervision from the Director of Ticketing & Patron Services. It is a part-time (non-exempt), seasonal position and has an hourly rate of $15.00 for House Manager shifts and an hourly rate of $11.00 + tips for Bartender shifts.
