Duncanville Public Library seeks a full-time assistant library director to work closely with the library director to oversee the library's operations. The Assistant Library Director will have direct oversight responsibility for staff and ensure exceptional customer service is provided to all patrons. This is an ideal position and opportunity for someone with previous success in a supervisory position or an experienced librarian in the public library space. The Assistant Library Director will be a key player in space review and redesign, IT planning, community needs assessment, and the development of the library’s newest strategic plan.
This position is under the supervision of the library director.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- As part of the management team, participate in the management of staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, assigning tasks, motivating, evaluating, and staff development.
- Act as the Person In-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Library Director
- Oversee and provide leadership for the day-to-day operations of the library.
- Provide leadership and facilitation of all library programming and outreach
- Lead the Library programming and outreach team, including facilitation of regularly scheduled meetings.
- Prioritize and propose programming and outreach priorities for Director approval.
- Create and distribute a programming and outreach schedule.
- Lead, coordinate, assign, and facilitate all library promotions, including fliers, calendars, social media, and website.
- Lead regular assessment of all library programming and outreach.
- Oversee the Library’s volunteer program.
- Lead and plan an annual Staff Development Day
- Communicate with city officials and assigned departments.
- Provide effective communication on procedures and processes to staff and the public in person, online, and over the phone.
- Respond to and resolve patron issues, including account questions and policy enforcement.
- Maintain an attractive, organized, and well-used library, including creating displays, shelving order, programming assistance, supplies inventory, and providing feedback to the Director on the needs of the community and library.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
- Assists the Library Director with preparing correspondence and reports such as monthly library statistics, annual report, and annual state library report
- Assist the Library Director in identifying, writing, and implementing grants.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
An individual should possess the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and have the required education, training, and/or work experience:
- ALA-Accredited MLS or MLIS degree required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of public library experience preferred.
- At least three (3) years of successful public library management/supervisory experience preferred.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Experience tracking usage statistics, data collection, and report preparation.
- Accommodate a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
- Knowledge of library equipment and technology
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communication skills– both verbal and written
- Excellent technical skills, including familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Suite, and knowledge of various technologies.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- Ability to sit for lengthy periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.

- Salary Range: $ 80,000-85,000 annually
