Job Title: Backcountry Guide Manager
Department: Ski & Snowboard School

Status: Seasonal FT

Reporting To: Ski & Snowboard School Director


Position Overview:


Powder Mountain is seeking a guest oriented, hospitality driven, self-motivated Backcountry Terrain Manager to manage our team of professional backcountry guides. Powder Mountain is a unique resort with public and private terrain. The Backcountry Ski Program will facilitate adventure ski offerings to both the public and members of Powder Haven - our private club and homeowner community. 


This role will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Backcountry Guided Terrain Program. This will include developing the staff, the process/scheduling flow, overall standard operating procedures, and collaboration with the marketing department for program upsell. 


In addition, you will be a part of the broader Ski & Snowboard School that is shaping the direction of the Backcountry Guide Program.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Expand, improve and adjust current program SOPs
  • Create, implement and exemplify Guide Safety Training
  • Ensure an elevated guest experience
  • Communicate and collaborate with Ski Patrol and Mtn Operations on terrain usage and trip planning
  • Arrange appropriate guide for guests, terrain, and client ability
  • Ensure guides comply with program and resort policies and procedures
  • Attend Powder Mountain snow safety meetings, relay information to staff
  • Define terrain that can be accessed based on snow safety information
  • Aid in the interviewing and onboarding of guides
  • Train and schedule guides
  • Create opportunity for, and support, professional development of guide staff 
  • Collaborate with adjacent departments to ensure quality of the guest experience
  • Lead program labor, capital and operational budget development. Provide accurate cost and data reporting
  • Evaluate quality of products, recommend improvements when needed.

Requirements and/or Qualifications:

  • Ability to ski and/or snowboard safely in backcountry, unpatrolled, expert lever terrain
  • Avalanche Certification that is accepted by the AAA - Pro Level 2 – preferred
  • Avalanche Certification that is accepted by the AAA - Pro Level 1 – required
  • Current OEC or EMT-B and Professional Level CPR Certification
  • On-Snow Ski Industry experience as a Manager of Ski School, Patrol, or similar – required
  • 2-4 year experience as a ski backcountry guide – required
  • Hospitality experience with high net worth guests 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and delegate efficiently
  • Ability to positively collaborate with all Powder Mountain On-Snow teams

Physical Requirements:

  • Full range of body movements
  • Reach, push, pull, lift and carry object that may be 40+ pounds
  • Carry a pack of 40+ pounds daily
  • Walk on uneven, slippery surfaces and terrain
  • Manual dexterity to operate manual tools such as shovels, probes and beacons on a consistent basis
  • Safely handle Hazardous Materials
  • Ability to move 200lb plus toboggan or medical extract device
  • Ability to ski tour 5,000+ vertical feet daily
  • Ability to navigate backcountry terrain in limited visibility/inclement weather

Working Environment:


The work environment is primarily in an outdoor environment. Work is performed outside consisting of extreme temperatures, loud sounds that may be distracting and in inclement weather (rain, snow, ice) at high altitude (9,000+ feet).  This role will see sun and wind exposure on a daily basis.

$35.00/hr
