Description

We are looking for an Automation Engineer with manufacturing experience to work out of our Detroit, MI office. 

 

The Automation Engineer has responsibility for automation and electrical/power initiatives and manufacturing information systems within the JSP’s Americas facilities. These initiatives are in support of improving manufacturing processes and operational efficiencies and providing reports and information manufacturing facilities.  

Main responsibilities are to oversee and/or personally perform the design, installation, programming, maintenance and troubleshooting of new and existing electrical distribution systems, programmable logic controllers, associated instrumentation systems. Development and maintenance of SCADA, data collection and intranet systems, including bidirectional relational database storage and retrieval and data exchange with higher level business systems. 

Responsibilities for this specific position include design, documentation, and implementation/migration of control systems incorporating new hardware and software components to modernize operations. Travel (estimate maximum 20%) to multiple sites in North America, and at times, South America.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

· Strong hands on background and demonstrated ability to provide practical technical skills for design and integration of control systems (hardware and software)

· Perform hands-on design, installation, programming, maintenance and troubleshooting of new and existing electrical and instrumentation systems

· Programming and troubleshooting on automation systems, process control systems 

· Develop Process Optimization and Automation systems related to Programmable Logic Controllers 

· Plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaption of electrical/automation control engineering techniques, procedures and criteria

· Partner with cross functional departments:  Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality

· Under general direction plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work in the field, including the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of capital improvement projects, plant infrastructure maintenance upgrades.  Duties will include but will not be limited to managing contractors, communication with representatives of regulatory agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development and upgrades, managing of engineering services, providing assistance to operations management in areas of expertise, performance of a variety of studies and preparation of status reports.

· Experience and practical knowledge in industry instrumentation, equipment and electrical systems, measurement technology, and field instrumentation design and application in process industry

· Knowledge in Communication technology and protocols (Ethernet/IP, OPC, Modbus, Modbus/TCP, DeviceNet, MQTT, etc.)

· Identify the process improvement opportunities using existing and new processes, and initialize, coordinate projects

· Systematically evaluate process design, process control and operation and identify the root causes for variability and sub-optimal performance

· Implement, integrate and deploy improvements such as performance/process monitoring tools, advanced process control schemes, data collection and reporting

· Generate ideas for improvement projects, including measurement of benefits and development of project cost/benefit analyses

· Devising new approaches to problems, preparing or modifying drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitoring work for compliance to applicable codes

· Work closely with end users to train personnel on the effective use of the systems

· Perform high quality work that is completed on time and within budget

· Achieve synergies with vendors/contractors and ensure that their work is completed on time, to specifications and within budget


Requirements

Preferred Skills/Tools

Rockwell Automation PLC programming environments

Siemens PLC programming environments

Familiarity with VFD drive/Servo technology including Yaskawa and Rockwell

HMI/SCADA Development Inductive Automation Ignition

Relational database experience, specifically MSSQL and MySQL

SQL scripting

Python

Java

Understanding of TCP/IP networking and network technologies

HTML, JavaScript, ASP.Net, Classic ASP

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and demonstrated experience in the following areas:

  • Industry instrumentation, equipment and electrical systems, measurement technology, and field instrumentation design and application in process industry
  • Familiarity with VFD drive/Servo technology including Yaskawa and Rockwell Python HTML, Java, JavaScript, ASP.Net, Classic ASPWillingness to LearnAbility to operate in an unstructured environment
