Summary
The Medical Assistant / Scribe plays a vital dual role in supporting dermatology providers by delivering high-quality clinical assistance and accurate real-time documentation. This position enhances provider efficiency and patient care by preparing patients for examination, assisting with dermatologic procedures, and documenting all aspects of the patient encounter within the electronic medical record (EMR).
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume dermatology environment while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and patient-centered care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Medical Assistant Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for examination by obtaining and documenting medical history, chief complaint, medications, allergies, and vital signs
- Escort patients to exam rooms and ensure efficient patient flow
- Assist providers with dermatologic procedures, including biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, and cosmetic treatments
- Prepare and maintain exam rooms, instruments, and supplies in accordance with infection control and OSHA standards
- Perform wound care and provide post-procedure instructions to patients
- Administer medications and injections as directed by provider and within scope of practice
- Ensure proper specimen labeling and handling for laboratory testing
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies and notify leadership of shortages
Scribe Responsibilities
- Accurately document patient encounters in real-time within the EMR, including history, exam findings, procedures, and treatment plans
- Record provider-dictated notes, diagnoses, and follow-up instructions
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of medical records to support billing and compliance
- Prepare charts in advance of patient visits (pre-charting), including reviewing prior history, pathology, and labs
- Enter orders, prescriptions, and referrals as directed by the provider
- Assist with completion of documentation for timely charge capture and claim submission
Patient Care & Communication
- Provide compassionate, professional patient care at all times
- Educate patients on treatment plans, medications, skincare routines, and post-procedure care
- Respond to patient questions and escalate clinical concerns to provider as appropriate
- Support a positive patient experience from intake through discharge
COMMON GENERAL DUTIES

- Adhere to OSHA and all infection control and safety protocols
- Follow all clinic policies, procedures, and workflows

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
- Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) preferred
- Minimum 1–2 years of clinical experience in dermatology or a specialty practice strongly preferred
- Prior medical scribing experience preferred

- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and dermatologic conditions/procedures
- Proficiency with EMR systems and medical documentation
- Excellent typing speed and accuracy for real-time documentation
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Fast-paced dermatology clinic with high patient volume
- Exposure to clinical procedures, bodily fluids, and biohazard materials
- Frequent interaction with patients, providers, and staff
PREFERRED DERMATOLOGY EXPERIENCE
- Familiarity with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancers
- Experience assisting with Mohs surgery or cosmetic dermatology procedures
- Knowledge of dermatology-specific EMR workflows and documentation standards
