Flagman / Traffic Control Technician

The Flagman/Traffic Control Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe movement of traffic around construction, utility, or maintenance work zones. This role protects workers, pedestrians, and motorists by effectively directing traffic and maintaining a safe environment on and around the job site.


  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control zones including cones, signs, and barricades according to local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Direct traffic safely around work zones using hand signals, flags, or traffic control paddles (STOP/SLOW signs).
  • Communicate clearly with other flaggers and crew members to coordinate traffic flow and worker safety.
  • Monitor work zones for safety hazards and report incidents or unsafe conditions to supervisors      immediately.
  • Provide clear and respectful instructions to motorists and pedestrians navigating through work zones.
  • Assist with general labor or site duties as needed when traffic control is not required.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and company policies.

  

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and use hand signals continuously for several hours.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed (e.g., traffic signs, cones).
  • Work outdoors in varying environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Certification in Traffic Control/Flagging (as required by state or local authority).
  • Previous experience in traffic control, construction, or related field is a plus.
  • Ability to remain alert, focused, and responsive for extended periods.
  • Strong communication and situational awareness skills.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions and stand for long periods.
  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites.
