Description
- Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, hand tools and equipment used for the completion of street construction, maintenance and repair projects; cleans vehicles equipment and tools subsequent to usage, performs routine maintenance as required.
- Participates in the repair of road and alley surfaces utilizing end loader, grader, vibratory roller, air compressor, backhoe, concrete saw, shovels, etc.
- Repairs and patches sidewalks, curbs, and other concrete surfaces located within the City of Zion as required.
- Cleans, rebuilds and installs storm sewers, sanitary sewers, manholes, and catch basins with such equipment as sewer vacuums, water pumps, backhoe, end loader and grader.
- Installs, repairs and maintains water mains, water service lines, water meters, fire hydrants, valves, valve pits and boxes.
- Is responsible for the safety and integrity of the water system, and to ensure the compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
- Fells dead or diseased trees with chain saw, trims trees through use of aerial truck, utilizes brush chipper to mulch tree branches and logs. Utilizes mechanical equipment or trucks and end loader for the collection of leaves from City streets.
- Removes snow and ice from municipal streets and right of ways through the operation of snow plow, grader, and trucks with snow plow, salt spreader attachments. Uses front end loader for removal of drifts and windrows from streets and corners. Applies de-icing or traction materials to streets, alleys, parking lots or sidewalks as directed. Installs snow fence prior to winter season as needed, and removes in spring.
- Operates dump trucks in loading and hauling various materials. Assists in hauling materials discarded by the residents of Zion, including but not limited to appliances, debris, construction debris, etc. Assists other departments during clean-up operations.
- Operates street sweeping equipment for the removal of debris accumulated or deposited along or in municipal streets. Services grease fittings and minor maintenance as required.
- Directs traffic and establishes traffic control for on-site workers; installs barricades in hazardous areas; installs temporary stop signs, paints school crossings, parking lots and other pavement markings as required.
- Performs duties related to holiday projects, including hanging and removing decorations, installing, repair and remove holiday lighting displays, collect and dispose of discarded Christmas trees.
- Investigates citizens complaints; reports accidents, code violations and/or illegal parking to Police Department and Building Department.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Requirements
- Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school. High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Combination of education and experience will be considered.
- For safety reasons, applicant must be able to communicate in writing and verbally with supervisors, residents of the City of Zion, and other employees.
- Requires possession of a valid Illinois Vehicle Operator’s Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class “B” with an air brake and tanker endorsement.
- Requires an understanding of the methods, procedures, and materials used in Public Works construction, maintenance, and repair operations.
- Requires elementary knowledge of the safety hazards faced in this type of work, and the appropriate precautions and safety measures to utilize.
- Requires the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Requires the ability to operate and learn the operation of vehicles, equipment and tools used for public works projects.
- Requires sound physical condition for manual labor.
- Requires the ability to work independently and complete tasks that are assigned.
- Requires the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather condition for extended periods of time.
- Requires the ability to operate vehicles and equipment during hazardous weather conditions.
- Requires mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
- Requires the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with co-works and the general public.
