Pay Range: $93,000 to $120,900 (hiring range is $93,000 to $106,950)

Evergreen Fire/Rescue founded in 1948, provides around the clock emergency medical, rescue, and fire suppression services along with community risk reduction services to nearly 26,000 residents across 126 square miles. Led by a Fire Chief and a progressive leadership team, EFR consists of six divisions: Administration, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Operations, Community Risk Reduction, Maintenance, and Wildland. About the Position

The Training & Safety Captain plays a critical leadership role in the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive training programs for fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue, wildland operations, and hazardous materials response. This position ensures that all personnel meet or exceed local, state, and federal requirements while promoting a culture of continuous professional development, operational excellence, and safety. The Training & Safety Captain also supports strategic planning initiatives and performs administrative tasks related to departmental readiness and accreditation.


Core Responsibilities Include:

The duties of this position align and evolve based on the needs of the district. Must be able to collaborate with other divisions to support the critical mission of the organization. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Design and lead a training strategy aligned with departmental goals, NFPA guidelines, EMS protocols, and wildfire operations.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and adjust based on feedback, post-incident reviews, and performance metrics.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct in-house training sessions in firefighting, EMS, rescue operations, and incident command systems.
  • Assist with the hiring of volunteer and career line staff; mentor and assist with evaluating volunteer and career staff.
  • Oversee and assist with supervision and teaching of the EFR Firefighter Academy (including EMT and Hazmat Classes) and make recommendations for program improvements, changes, and efficiencies. 
  • Maintain relationships with outside agencies for regional training opportunities and EFR’s regional Firefighter Academy.
  • Coordinate with officers, team leads, EMS coordinators, wildland leadership, and technical rescue teams(s) to establish comprehensive training calendar.
  • Manage RMS for required certifications and continuing education requirements for both fire and EMS personnel for compliance with state and national standards.
  • Maintain accurate training records, certifications, and documentation for audits and accreditation purposes.
  • Analyze operational performance data to identify training needs and prioritize focus areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with command staff to incorporate training initiatives into long-term strategic and operational planning.
  • Function as the agency’s safety officer when responding to incidents and responsible for reviewing accidents and injuries. 
  • Promote a safety-first culture through risk assessment, safety briefings, and ongoing training in safe operations.
  • Lead and/or assist with after-action reviews (AARs) and integrate findings into future training to enhance safety and performance.
  • Monitor trends and innovations in fire, EMS, and emergency response training to implement best practices and modern methodologies.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA, NREMT, and state-specific certification requirements and expectations.
  • Maintain knowledge of all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and mentor to fire and EMS personnel for establishment and maintain proficiency in core job essentials.
  • Respond to operational incidents and provide backfill support for team members during absences or high-demand periods to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Represent the department at local and regional training committees, task forces, and professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience required for success:

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Three years’ experience in delivering employee training and developing training programs 
  • Five years’ experience as a firefighter 
  • Five years’ experience in EMS services, EMT-B or higher certification
  • Three years of supervision/leadership of fire and/or EMS personnel 
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License within 90 days of hire
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 700, 800 
  • NIMS 130/190/L-180 with Red Card
  • Fire Officer I
  • Fire Instructor I
  • Driver/Pump Operator
  • Incident Safety Officer 
  • Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (Pack Test)
  • Fire Instructor II**
  • Training Program Manager**
  • NFPA 1403 credentialing**
  • Colorado EMS Instructor Administrator Course or equivalent**
  • Colorado EMS Primary and Secondary Instructor Certifications **

**Will establish a professional development plan and timeline for completion upon hire


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Associates Degree in Fire Science or related field
  • Chief Training Officer Credential (CPSE)
  • Current Colorado State EMT- P Certified
