OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Volunteer Engagement is a crucial leadership role responsible for setting the strategic vision and operational execution of volunteer services across the organization, ensuring alignment with the goals of the Academic Success, Career Success, and Development departments. This position is responsible for driving the entire volunteer lifecycle–including sourcing, recruitment, screening, onboarding, training, strategic placement, and evaluation–to maximize volunteer impact in support of the 10,000 Degrees mission. The Director provides direct supervision to the Academic Success Coordinator positions and collaborates closely with the organizational leaders to meet their respective volunteer support needs.

To perform the essential functions of this position, employees may be required to:
- Sit, stand, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
- Occasionally required to stand for prolonged periods.
- Have close-vision ability due to computer work.
- Engage in moderate, occasional lifting.
- Have a reliable means of transportation to attend regular work as well as other off-site business functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Strategy & Oversight
- Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate a strategic plan for volunteer engagement that supports the goals of the organization.
- Oversee all processes related to new volunteer recruitment: intake, screening, documentation, orientation, and training,
- Regularly evaluate volunteers and processes to ensure the effective delivery of student-centered and strength-based practices.
- Ensure all volunteers are appropriately matched with placements and activities that align with the organizational needs and individual skills, including support for PreK-12th grade academic programs, college readiness, career advising, and fundraising events.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of volunteer activities, hours, and program effectiveness using systems like Salesforce.
- Address and resolve any escalated issues that arise with volunteer placements or interactions, and conduct regular evaluations of programming.
Leadership & Team Management
- Directly supervise, coach, and develop the team of Academic Success/Volunteer Coordinators, ensuring they are effectively managing volunteers and program needs in their designated schools/regions.
- In the absence of key staff, provide direct support to our volunteers as needed.
- Foster a collaborative, high-accountability culture within the volunteer and Academic Success teams focused on student and alumni success.
- Serving as the point person for all volunteer efforts, work cross-departmentally with various teams and community partners to align organizational priorities and goals.
General Duties
- Drive the effective sourcing, placement, and handoff of volunteers to various internal teams to meet critical needs, including career support, tutoring, fundraising, and others.
- Serve as the primary internal resource and thought partner for volunteer management best practices across all departments.
- Create, maintain, and oversee the annual budget for your team.
- Attend and support volunteer events in all regions served by the organization as needed.
- This position requires some in-person presence and/or travel within the regions served.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Science, a related field, or equivalent work history
- 5+ years in a leadership role in volunteer coordination or related field
- Demonstrated success with program and people management responsibilities, including supervising and coaching staff
- Proven expertise in the full volunteer management lifecycle
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve problems effectively, and take effective action, both with a team and independently
- Exceptional communication (written and verbal), organizational, administrative, and project management skills
- Proven savvy for tailoring communications to suit a variety of audiences, including internal/external stakeholders, students, volunteers, and Board members
- Proficiency with Google Suite and demonstrable experience leveraging Salesforce
- Knowledge of nonprofit, community-based organizations
- Solution and detail-oriented with the ability to operate effectively with minimal supervision
