About the Role

The Tax Associate will be primarily responsible for assisting the Tax Team in overseeing the day-to-day tax functions for the Firm's fund structures, which include 30+ closed-end private investment funds and three (3) business development companies ("BDCs"). We are seeking a candidate to join our growing team with a proven ability to work collaboratively with groups across an organization and with outside service providers to direct appropriate information flow and effectively manage compliance and reporting deadlines.


This position will be hybrid out of our Chicago office with the expectation to come on-site 3-4x per week.


Job Responsibilities

  • Assist 3rd party service providers in completion of tax compliance work, including preparation and timely filing of tax returns for partnerships and coordinate timely payment of all estimated tax payments and/or filing of requests for extensions, both domestically and internationally
  • Understand complex partnership tax structures and transactions with strong ability to review and prepare partnership allocations, including preferred return and carried interest calculations
  • Familiarity with complex limited liability company (LLC) agreements and distribution waterfall mechanics 
  • Research tax issues, understand implications of investment decisions, and prepare communication of conclusions to senior management
  • Assist in the interaction with the IRS as well as foreign and state tax authorities
  • Assist in development of policies and procedures to ensure consistent and accurate information is produced 
  • Assist in managing relationships with third parties, including portfolio company contacts, for K-1 questions, tax distributions and estimates
  • Maintain strong customer service focus with our Limited Partners, ensuring timely and accurate responses to questions and requests along with the distribution of 1,000s of K-1s and 1099s
  • Preparing and maintaining tax forms (W-9, W-8, etc.) for 100s of entities, including preparation and filing of Forms 8832 where necessary
  • Assisting Investor Relations team with review of tax documentation for investor onboarding and affiliate transfers
  • Assist Accounting team with year-end audit confirmation process
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in public accounting (or similar experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in accountancy and/or Finance; CPA preferred
  • Experience with financial services tax, accounting, or financial reporting
  • Must be intelligent, a fast learner, extremely detail oriented, and thorough, with basic accounting and analytical skills
  • Must have experience preparing or reviewing partnership tax returns and familiar with partnership agreements, partnership allocations, and carried interest allocations.
  • Must have a positive, hands-on attitude and be willing to roll up their sleeves to do anything and everything needed to support the efforts of the team.
  • Must be independent, a problem solver, able to juggle multiple workstreams and have ability to excel under stress while functioning at a high level in an environment that is constantly changing.

Preferred Background

  • Experience with financial services tax, accounting, or financial reporting
  • Experience with partnership taxation, international tax, or other relevant tax experience
  • Strong ability / knowledge of Microsoft Excel features

  Physical Requirements

  • Sitting: Frequently (approximately 70–80% of the workday) for computer work, phone communication, and administrative tasks.
  • Standing and Walking: Occasionally (approximately 20–30% of the workday), including walking between Monroe offices or meeting rooms.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds (e.g., office supplies, boxes of paper, or small equipment).
  • Reaching/Bending: Occasionally required when organizing supplies or accessing shelves.
  • Typing/Keyboard Use: Frequently required for daily computer and administrative tasks.
  • Vision and Hearing: Adequate for reading reports, emails, spreadsheets, and verbal communication.
  • Speaking: Frequent verbal communication with staff, vendors, and external partners.

Compensation: Base salary range: $85,000-100,000, plus performance-based bonus and comprehensive benefits package (including medical, dental, 401(k), and paid time off). Actual compensation will vary based on experience and qualifications. If hired, the employee will be in an ‘at-will position’ and the Firm reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Firm or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
