Description

The Underground Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of Caterpillar underground mining equipment. This role supports safe, efficient, and reliable equipment operation in underground mining environments while delivering high levels of customer service and technical expertise.


  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain  Caterpillar underground mining equipment (loaders, trucks, drills, bolters, etc.).
  • Perform preventive maintenance and component rebuilds according to Caterpillar standards.
  • Use CAT Electronic Technician (ET) and other diagnostic tools to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
  • Work safely and efficiently in underground mine environments, following MSHA and company safety regulations.
  • Complete accurate service reports, work orders, and inspection documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and service teams regarding equipment condition and repair      recommendations.
  • Respond to breakdowns in a timely manner to minimize  equipment downtime.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly  care for tools and service vehicles.
  • Participate in ongoing Caterpillar training and  technical development programs.
  • Work rotating 7 on7 off shifts as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

Required Qualifications

  • Safety minded and focused
  • Need to follow all Kennecott Safety standards and stay  compliant 
  • Minimum [5] years of experience working on heavy equipment, preferably underground mining equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics,  electrical systems, and powertrain components.
  • Experience with Caterpillar equipment and systems preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in  challenging environments.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work underground in confined spaces, low-light conditions, heat, dust, and noise.
  • Ability to lift up to [50–75] lbs and perform physical tasks such as climbing, bending, and kneeling.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Caterpillar dealer or OEM training and certifications.
  • MSHA underground certification.
  • Welding or fabrication experience.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
