Vice President of Technology
Fully Remote Remote Technology & Engineering
Job Type
Full-time
Description

WHO WE ARE

New Classrooms is a national non-profit organization focused on reimagining math education for all students. We are a fully remote team of educators, technologists, and advocates committed to the idea that all students deserve an educational pathway that meets them where they are and gets them to where they need to be. We partner with schools, districts, and states to support the implementation of our personalized, competency-based math solution, Teach to One Roadmaps, while also advocating for shifts across the K-12 landscape to create the conditions for more student-centered learning.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Vice President of Technology for our mission-driven ed-tech company. This role reports directly to the President of Teach to One, and is responsible for the overall technical execution, scalability, reliability, and evolution of a sophisticated software platform built on microservices, GraphQL, a component-based frontend, and numerous integrations with external systems. Our product is hosted on AWS and delivered through a robust, automated CI/CD pipeline.  This role is also responsible for the general corporate technology management, including data privacy, cyber security and IT support.

The organization operates as a remote-first organization, and this role is responsible for leading and scaling a geographically distributed engineering team across multiple time zones. The engineering organization includes individual contributors who are a mix of full-time employees and offshore contractors, requiring strong leadership across distributed teams, employment models, and cultures.

In addition to core product development and operational improvements, the organization is engaged in an ongoing effort to design and implement a data warehouse and business intelligence (BI) platform. The technical components of this initiative—including data modeling, warehouse schema design, and ETL/ELT development—will be executed by members of the engineering organization under this role’s leadership.

The VP of Technology will partner closely with Product, Program Success, Data Insights, and Business leaders to translate vision into high-quality, scalable solutions that improve outcomes.

  • Lead, mentor, and manage four direct reports: Director of Engineering, Director of Quality Assurance, Director of IT/Cybersecurity, and Director of Development Operations.
  • Build and sustain a high-performing, remote-first engineering culture grounded in ownership, accountability and continuous improvement, with a shared technical understanding across frontend, backend, data, QA, and infrastructure teams.
  • Establish clear technical standards, architectural principles, and best practices across teams.
  • Drive deliberate improvement in delivery frequency through operational process improvements, modern tooling, reduced knowledge silos, and continuous learning.

Technology & Architecture

  • Provide executive-level technical leadership for a fullstack platform including modern frontend applications and a distributed, microservices-based backend using GraphQL and RESTful APIs.
  • Oversee system architecture decisions to ensure scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Ensure frontend architecture and development practices support rapid experimentation, accessibility, and high-quality user experiences for educators and students.
  • Guide the evolution of integrations with external systems (e.g., learning platforms, data providers, identity systems).
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic direction for the development of the company’s data warehouse, including schema design and data pipelines.
  • Ensure the platform remains robust, current, secure, and compliant with relevant education and data privacy standards.

Delivery & Operational Excellence

  • Drive continuous improvement of a complex, production-grade CI/CD pipeline to support frequent, reliable deployments. Coordinate engineering, devops, and quality assurance teams to explicitly minimize cycle time and operational toil.
  • Partner with DevOps to ensure strong cloud infrastructure practices on AWS, including cost optimization, observability, reliability, and disaster recovery.
  • Champion quality-first development practices in partnership with technology team leadership.

Data & Analytics Enablement

  • Collaborate with data, analytics, and business stakeholders to ensure the warehouse and BI tools meet organizational reporting and decision-making needs.
  • Champion data-informed decision-making within engineering and across adjacent parts of the organization (such as the product and program success teams) by ensuring teams have timely, trusted access to analytics data.
  • Balance product engineering priorities with data platform investments.

Vendor, Contractor, and Budget Management

  • Own the technology budget, including headcount planning, contractor spend, tooling, cloud infrastructure, and vendor costs.
  • Establish and execute a contracting and vendor management strategy that balances cost efficiency, quality, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Oversee relationships with offshore development partners and other technology vendors, ensuring clear expectations, performance accountability, and alignment with company standards.
  • Partner with Finance and executive leadership on forecasting, capacity planning, and cost optimization initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product and Design leadership to balance speed, quality, and technical sustainability.
  • Partner with Data, Analytics, and Customer-facing teams to ensure the platform meets real-world user needs.
  • Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and risks clearly to the CEO, executive team, and non-technical stakeholders.

Cyber Security & IT Support

  • Provide executive level leadership for a comprehensive data privacy and cyber security strategy, and ensure systematic implementation to maintain standards required for New Classrooms to achieve its goals
  • Guide the management of initiatives to maintain SOC 2 Type II compliance, and the decision to attain certification in other cybersecurity frameworks
  • Oversee the management of corporate IT support, including software, hardware, user account and configuration management
  • Manage the Associate Director, Cyber Security & Help Desk

Talent & Organization

  • Attract, retain, and develop top talent in a remote-first environment.
  • Design and evolve team structures to support growth and changing business needs.
  • Establish career paths, performance expectations, and succession plans within the department, inclusive of both employees and contractors.
