Description

 

St. Croix Health is a seeking a full-time Lead Medical Lab Scientist (MLS/MT) scheduled day and evening shifts.  In this role you will oversee the blood bank functioning as a key operator and trainer for instrumentation.  You will have the opportunity to work as a generalist in multiple areas of the laboratory, including the possibility of Microbiology. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manages daily function of assigned department area.
  • Performs validation studies on new equipment including testing in assigned area, completing proper documentation and submitting to Laboratory Director for approval
  • Serve as staff resource for instrumentation and testing questions
  • Train staff and perform competency observations 
  •  Assign proficiency sample assignments to staff, evaluate results and complete/submit required documentation

2. Collect and process orders and specimens.  

  • Performs phlebotomy and specimen collection
  • Ensure specimens are collected in appropriate containers
  • Accurately label specimens per organization policy and procedure
  • Documents received, entered and released orders in LIS and EMR
  • Receives minimal or no specimen rejection by testing staff

3. Performs Quality Control checks and required Quality Control reporting.

  • Documents quality control results in QC logs
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems
  • Perform monthly online bench review of Quality Control and submits to peers for comparison
  • Prepare and submit monthly Quality Control data and documentation to Director for review
  • Responsible for documenting problems and resolutions in troubleshooting logs

4. Manage equipment maintenance process.

  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Captures pertinent information in equipment maintenance log
  • Proactively troubleshoots equipment problems
  • Documents all instrument troubleshooting in appropriate log
  • Contact appropriate service provider when equipment services required
  • Submit appropriate documentation to Director for review

5. Performs laboratory testing, reports results accurately and timely. 

  • Reports critical, urgent and significant values per department policy
  • Responsible for documentation in LIS and EMR
  • Correlate test results to patient’s clinical presentation
  • Accurately document data in critical value and turnaround time reports

6. Other duties as assigned

  • Participate in department quality improvement projects
  • Review and revise department policies and procedures as directed 
  • Ensure sufficient supplies and reagents are available for testing 
  • Keeps work area neat and clean
  • Order & restock supplies 
  • Attends regular department meetings
  • Completes required trainings
  • Other duties as assigned based on SCRMC business need
Requirements

Education & Licensure:

  • Current MT/CLS/MLS (ASCP) certification or equivalent or obtained within one year of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree or HEW, HSS, certified as a Medical Technologist or equivalent
  • 1- 2 years MT/CLS/MLS experience required
  • BLS Card required upon hire
  • Lead/supervisory experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
