The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico's leading news source, is looking for an experienced Sports Reporter to lead coverage of New Mexico United, Albuquerque’s USL Championship soccer club, while also contributing to coverage of the region’s vibrant professional, collegiate, and high school sports scene. This role is perfect for a journalist who loves community-driven sports storytelling and is just as comfortable filing a game recap as crafting a thoughtful feature. 

Responsibilities

• Research, pitch, and develop relevant story ideas aligned with editorial priorities.
• Conduct interviews, fact-check, and verify sources to produce accurate and balanced reporting.
• Write clear, concise, and engaging news and feature articles for print and digital publication.
• Collaborate with the editorial team and multimedia specialists to integrate photos, videos, and graphics into stories.
• Participate in live coverage, podcasts, or other multimedia projects as needed.
• Evening desk shifts, including editing copy, selecting national stories for print, and collaborating with page designers 
• Maintain strong relationships with community members, sources, and industry professionals to stay informed about local and regional issues.
• Adhere to deadlines while managing multiple assignments simultaneously.

Skills and Knowledge:

• Strong research, interviewing, and writing skills.

Experience and Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• A minimum of 3-5 years of professional reporting experience.
• Proven experience writing for both digital and print platforms.
• Familiarity with data visualization tools or social media analytics.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a hybrid environment, with time split between an office setting and field reporting. Evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required to meet deadlines or cover breaking news.
