SUMMARY
The School Nurse will oversee all health services related to planning, recordkeeping, maintenance, and the execution of first aid and emergency safety materials and procedures on the Upper Campus. This individual will be part of a team that shepherds the students' mental, physical, spiritual, and academic health at all campuses. He/she has both a desire to minister to the total child and a calling in his/her heart to serve God as a staff member within a covenantal community. This individual is available to students before, during, and after school. Specific hours will be discussed upon consideration. Preference is given to internal candidates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The nurse will be responsible for treating students who come to the health office for a variety of reasons each day, ranging from minor injuries and illnesses to dealing with emergencies and other major health concerns. The nurse will meet, as needed, with students and their parents regarding ongoing health issues and will communicate pertinent information to the students’ teachers. There may be occasions to collaborate with the athletic trainer, such as for fractures or concussions sustained during an athletic event. He/she will be part of an administrative team with the Deans of Student Life, the Academic Counselor, and the Director of Admissions, who will meet as needed to facilitate the success and well-being of the whole student as they pursue a classical education within our covenantal community.
- The nurse will review and update all Upper Campus student medical records (including immunization documentation and reporting to the state of Arizona) at the beginning of the year and notify parents of any deficiencies. Serious student health concerns that may require an urgent response (allergies/epi pens, diabetes/insulin, and seizure activity) will be communicated to all teachers and staff at the beginning of each year, with a safety plan for these students. This function will extend throughout the year as new students arrive and health concerns change with existing students.
- The nurse will serve as an educational resource within the school community on health, safety, and human sexuality. The school Nurse will work directly with school staff and administration to plan curriculum and schedule forums/events where public speaking/teaching may be necessary. He/she would also communicate health-related teaching to parents.
- The nurse will supervise the preparation and execution of first aid and emergency training and procedures for Upper School staff on health-related issues. This function includes creating and maintaining an accurate, ongoing inventory of health storage. He/she will oversee the storage and administration of parent-supplied medicines for our students. Additionally, he/she will stock classroom first-aid kits and the staff lounge with basic over-the-counter medications.
- The nurse will organize and orchestrate annual student hearing screenings as mandated by the State of Arizona.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- The nurse will work closely with the faculty as class field trips, retreats, and trips are planned to ensure proper safety measures are taken and to maintain the health of our students during school-sponsored events held off-campus. Additionally, work with parents who volunteer to be the “health person” for various trips, and provide the necessary supplies and documentation for each event. This includes communicating with parents before the trips regarding any health/allergy concerns or medication that will need to be administered during the trip.
- The nurse will serve as a medical resource, providing information for school employees and parents. This function requires serving as a consultant to office staff on contagion issues and making decisions about sending students home who are experiencing illness/injury, or other medical conditions. The school nurse will also provide parents and the school community with information about school epidemics or large-scale medical issues and concerns. When necessary, the school nurse will collaborate with administrators to develop policies and procedures to maintain a healthy school environment and to communicate with parents about best practices and expectations for school attendance during an outbreak.
- The nurse will be responsible for interviewing and hiring substitute health personnel to fill in when necessary. He/she will also be responsible for training the substitutes and ensuring that the individual(s) remain current in CPR and first aid training.
