The Evergreen School, an independent school serving highly capable students in preschool through 8th grade, is currently accepting applications for an Upper Division Resident Teacher (One Year Position for 2026-2027 school year).
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Upper Division Resident Teacher (Grades 4–8) is a one-year, full-time teaching position designed to support instructional continuity and student learning across the upper division. Serving as an in-house substitute teacher, the Resident Teacher works across grades 4–8, providing classroom coverage during short- and long-term teacher absences while maintaining consistency with established curricula, classroom norms, and school culture.
This role is ideal for an early-career educator or career-changer seeking immersive, hands-on experience in an independent school setting. The Resident Teacher gains exposure to multiple grade levels, teaching styles, and subject areas while receiving mentorship and professional growth opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instructional Support
- Serve as the primary substitute teacher for grades 4–8, providing coverage across subject areas as needed.
- Implement lesson plans prepared by classroom teachers and division leadership.
- Maintain continuity of instruction, classroom routines, and behavioral expectations during teacher absences.
- Adapt instruction as appropriate to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students.
- Provide short-term instructional planning when lesson plans are not available, in alignment with division standards and scope.
- Student Support and Classroom Management
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
- Uphold school-wide and division-specific behavior expectations and restorative practices.
- Build positive relationships with students across multiple grade levels.
- Support students with varied learning styles and needs, in collaboration with learning specialists when applicable.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Communicate when necessary with division heads, classroom teachers, and support staff regarding classroom activities, schedules, and coverage needs.
- Support the coordination of substitute coverage by assisting with internal coverage needs and transitions during teacher absences.
- Ensure smooth handoffs between substitute coverage and returning teachers by sharing relevant logistical or instructional notes as appropriate.
- Adhere to all school policies, procedures, and confidentiality expectations.
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree in education or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience working with children in grades 4–8 (e.g., teaching, student teaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or classroom support).
- Interest in pursuing a career in education or related fields strongly preferred.
- Skills and Abilities
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to quickly build rapport with students and establish classroom presence.
- Flexibility and adaptability to teach across multiple grade levels and subject areas.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow lesson plans while exercising sound judgment when adjustments are needed.
- Basic proficiency with educational technology and learning management systems.

Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds in connection with job duties such as assisting with classroom setup or moving materials.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and school hallways for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and escort students as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times
Position Details:
This is a one year exempt, 1.0 FTE full-time, benefits eligible position. This position follows a 10-month work schedule while paid over 12 months. The salary for this position is $55,000 per year.
