Description
The Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO) Concert Orchestra Conductor is responsible for leading weekly rehearsals, occasional additional rehearsals as needed, and all student performances. The conductor also oversees the planning of level-appropriate repertoire and ensures the highest artistic quality and development for the Concert Orchestra. This role requires strong leadership, artistic vision, and a commitment to music education and youth development.
Responsibilities
- Lead rehearsals and conduct Concert Orchestra student performances.
- In collaboration with the Director of Learning and the Youth Orchestras Manager, develop and execute annual performance goals for the Concert Orchestra.
- Design cohesive concert programs for the CSYO Concert Orchestra season, utilizing all orchestra players whenever possible.
- Assist with the annual audition process in August.
- In collaboration with Learning staff, advise on fair and transparent application of Concert Orchestra policies, including seating and part assignments.
- Determine string bowings for YO Manager to prepare parts and distribute to string students.
- Maintain positive and professional relationships with CSYO students and caregivers, CSO musicians, CSO staff, and CSO board members.
- Collaborate with CSO Learning Department staff to implement and execute CSYO policies.
- Create weekly rehearsal schedules to be shared with students via Youth Orchestras Manager
- Assist with CSYO recruitment, which may include school visits and guest conducting opportunities.
- Reflect the CSO’s mission, vision, and values in your work as well as supporting a respectful organizational culture.
- Other duties as assigned
Reports to: Director of Learning
Requirements
- Professional or aspiring professional conductor with demonstrated experience leading orchestras.
- Experience working with youth orchestras and/or youth programs
- Degrees in music performance, or education; conducting certificates; and any other related/relevant experience
- Strong artistic standards, engaging energy, and ability to motivate young musicians.
- Effective communication and organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines.
- Passionate about music education, highly organized, and detail oriented.
Working Conditions and Schedule
- Weekly rehearsals on Sunday afternoons from September to May
- Candidates should live within a two-hour radius of Cincinnati and have reliable transportation
- 2-3 concerts per season
- Additional days and times as needed (auditions, concert days, CSYO at CSO nights, special events, etc.)
