The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico’s paper of record, is seeking an experienced, decisive, and collaborative News Editor to help lead one of the state’s most influential newsrooms.
This is a high-impact leadership role at the center of our daily and weekend coverage. The News Editor guides coverage, shapes storytelling, and ensures our journalism is accurate, ethical, and compelling across print and digital platforms. This role oversees reporters and photographers, sets coverage priorities, mentors journalists at every stage of their careers, and plays a key role in how New Mexico sees itself every day.

What You’ll Do
- Lead and inspire a team of a dozen or more reporters and several photographers, setting clear expectations and high journalistic standards.
- Serve as a daily editor and coach, providing mentorship, feedback, and professional guidance that helps journalists grow and succeed.
- Drive and coordinate coverage across Albuquerque and New Mexico, including City Hall, elections, crime, Balloon Fiesta, and the state Legislature.
- Track multiple beats throughout the day, assigning stories and collaborating with photographers to deliver strong visual and narrative storytelling.
- Edit stories as they are filed, working closely with reporters to strengthen clarity, accuracy, context, and impact.
- Partner with assistant editors to ensure multiple layers of review and editorial oversight on every story before publication.
- Plan and map out daily and weekend newspapers, including centerpiece art and content for the A and Metro sections.
- Publish and manage stories using newsroom content management systems.
- Edit copy to meet style, tone, length, and quality standards, ensuring clean, accurate publication.
- Use Associated Press and other wire content strategically, working with designers on layout and presentation.
- Ensure all content is completed accurately and on deadline in a fast-moving news environment.
- Collaborate across the newsroom with reporters, editors, designers, photographers, and digital staff.
- Handle supervisory responsibilities, including approving timecards and expenses, completing performance evaluations, and supporting accountability and staff development.
- Assist with website management as needed.
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics and professional conduct.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field required.
- 8 years of professional journalism experience.
- Previous reporting experience.
- Prior newspaper experience.
- Supervisory or team-lead experience.
