Individuals participating in an internship with YWCA Greater Pittsburgh programs will develop professional skills, build networks, and gain tangible work experience to support their future careers while working side-by-side with highly experienced, non-profit professionals.
The Program Evaluation focus area at YWCA Greater Pittsburgh supports all programs, administration, and the organization by developing and implementing data collection tools, ensuring data is accurately compiled and analyzed, and creating comprehensive reports. By working closely with each focus area and leadership, the Program Evaluation team highlights program impact through data and empowers the organization to make informed, data-driven decisions. This cohesive approach enables YWCA to demonstrate effectiveness, measure mission impact, and continuously improve service delivery.
Join YWCA Greater Pittsburgh’s Program Evaluation and Data Management team as our Systems Innovation Intern and contribute to the development of user-centered digital tools, ethically aligned AI features and advanced data practices that strengthen our ability to serve the community. This internship provides a hands-on, graduate-level experience designing and enhancing data systems within a nonprofit setting, where you will work closely with experienced professionals to create tools that improve workflow efficiency, support high-quality data collection and generate meaningful insights. In this role, you will help ensure that emerging technologies are used responsibly and in alignment with YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and uplift the people and communities we serve.
Essential Job Functions
- Design and build user-friendly digital tools, forms, and workflows using YWCA’s existing software platforms to support efficient and accurate data collection across programs.
- Develop, test, and refine ethical AI agents that strengthen internal processes such as intake, resource navigation, communication pathways, or staff task flows.
- Conduct graduate-level data analysis, including data validation, trend identification, and synthesis of insights to support organizational decision-making.
- Prepare clear, comprehensive reports and visualizations that communicate program performance, participant demographics, and mission-impact indicators to leadership and program teams.
- Collaborate with staff across focus areas to understand workflow needs and translate them into technical requirements for digital tools or AI-supported functions.
- Ensure responsible use of AI and data systems by applying ethical standards, maintaining data security, and centering equity and participant dignity in all project design choices.
- Support the development and enhancement of dashboards or analytics solutions that improve staff access to real-time data and empower data-driven decisions agency-wide.
- Document tool functionality, provide guidance to staff, and contribute to training materials that support adoption and effective implementation.

- Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand complex workflows, think logically about system design, and adapt technical knowledge to new platforms quickly. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and apply a thoughtful, user-centered approach to creating or improving digital tools.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong technical aptitude with graduate-level coursework or experience in information systems, data technologies, or related fields. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new digital platforms, workflows, app-building tools, and AI-supported systems. Proficient in Excel, with familiarity in GIS concepts encouraged.
- Education: Enrollment in a graduate program (Master’s or Doctoral) in a field such as Information Systems, Data Science, Public Policy with a technology or research focus, Social Work with a data/tech emphasis, Evaluation, Computer Science, or another related discipline that provides a strong technical and analytical foundation.
- Experience: Background gained through coursework, academic projects, prior work or internships involving technical problem-solving, digital systems, or structured workflows. Experience that demonstrates strong adaptability, comfort learning new platforms, and the ability to apply transferable technical skills to support tool development and workflow improvement is highly valued.
