Course Overview: Bully Pulpit is a nationally acclaimed 18-hole, par 72 daily fee golf course designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan. We are located on the I-94 corridor in the Scenic and historic Badlands of North Dakota along the Little Missouri River, just 3 miles south of Historic Medora, ND. The golf course measures 7,166 yards from the Championship tees but has four other sets to choose from.
Summary/Objective
The 2nd Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Assistant Superintendent and assists with the day-to-day oversight of the maintenance and agronomic practices of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course and adjacent grounds.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Report golf course conditions to the Assistant Superintendent.
- Assist in all phases of golf course maintenance as directed, including mowing, aerification, Verti cutting, irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide application.
- Calibrate, operate, and document use of pesticide sprayers, fertilizers, and other chemical applications in alignment with the agronomic plan.
- Support the planning and execution of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual turf management schedules.
- Help oversee, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal grounds staff, ensuring proper task distribution, safe equipment operation, and adherence to procedures.
- Promote and enforce safety policies; assist with safety training, meetings, and documentation.
- Identify turfgrass diseases, weeds, and insects, and recommend appropriate treatment strategies.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and repair; help maintain inventory and accurate records.
- Contribute to developing short and long-range maintenance goals, budget preparation, and process improvements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall course operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Trains seasonal golf course grounds staff.
- Assist with scheduling, organizing, and assigning projects to members of the seasonal golf course grounds team.

Required Education and Experience
- Any combination of experience and training equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management, or related major.
- Two-year’s experience in golf course grounds preferred
- Working knowledge of golf course operations and practices is necessary.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Possesses Pesticide License or is able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Up-to-date knowledge of latest golf course tools, technologies, and best practices.
- Knowledge of the game of golf.
- Knowledge of the construction, establishment, and maintenance practices employed on golf course putting greens, tee, fairways, roughs, and bunkers; planting, cultivation, and pruning of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions; pesticide control method and materials; drainage methods; and watering practices and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance of the maintenance facility, restrooms, fences, bridges, golf cart paths, service roads, parking lots, ponds, and streams.
Work Environment
Work hours may include days and evenings on weekdays and weekends. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. May be exposed to inclement weather, potentially dangerous chemicals, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misdirected golf balls, sharp and rapid equipment movement on a daily basis. Injury or sickness may result if safety policies and practices are not properly followed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position that regularly requires long hours and weekend work.
