The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key executive leader and strategic partner to the CEO and Board, responsible for ensuring the company remains financially healthy, profitable, and well positioned for rapid expansion. This role leads all financial strategy, accounting operations, reporting, budgeting, pricing strategy, lease oversight, and expansion modeling while keeping executives, directors, managers, and owners informed and aligned.
Success in this role means maintaining strong cash flow during new construction cycles, delivering clear and actionable financial insights to leaders at every level, creating disciplined and realistic budgets, designing incentive programs that drive performance, and ensuring new locations are financially viable. The CFO must proactively identify trends and risks, recommend solutions, and provide steady leadership through both growth and economic uncertainty. This role requires the ability to translate financial data into practical guidance for non-financial leaders while maintaining a strategic, long term view of the business.
The CFO directly manages the Bookkeeper, IT Manager, Membership Manager, and Regional Retail Managers and serves as a mentor and resource to leaders across the company.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Develop and execute a long term financial strategy aligned with Momentum’s growth plans, capital investments, and profitability goals while serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board.
- Provide consistent, transparent financial updates to Walltopia and participate in early morning meetings as required due to time zone differences.
- Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities, and proactively recommend strategic adjustments to protect margins and cash flow.
- Guide the company through expansion cycles, economic shifts, and capital intensive construction phases with disciplined planning and forecasting.
Financial Management & Accounting Oversight
- Oversee all accounting functions, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, tax compliance, business registrations, and acquisition due diligence, ensuring accuracy and strong internal controls.
- Import and reconcile sales data from Rock Gym Pro into NetSuite and maintain integrity between POS and ERP systems.
- Supervise the Bookkeeper who manages sales tax filings, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and company credit cards, while ensuring timely close processes and clean financial reporting.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local regulations across U.S. and Canadian operations.
Reporting & Financial Communication
- Prepare and present company financials during monthly Director meetings, General Manager meetings, and quarterly Program Manager financial reviews.
- Provide location and department level reporting that clearly outlines revenue, labor, expenses, margin performance, and key operational metrics.
- Translate financial performance into practical guidance for Directors, Managers, and Department Leaders to improve results.
- Ensure the CEO and Board have clear visibility into performance, forecasts, capital expenditures, and cash flow projections.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Incentives
- Lead the development of department, location, and consolidated company budgets in collaboration with Directors and Managers, and submit the annual budget to Walltopia by October of the preceding year.
- Monitor performance against budget throughout the year and adjust forecasts based on trends and expansion timelines.
- Design, structure, and administer Director and Manager incentive bonus programs by defining performance metrics, calculating quarterly payouts, and communicating progress toward targets.
- Evaluate labor models and expense ratios to ensure operational efficiency across all locations and departments.
Expansion Planning & Market Analysis
- Develop detailed financial pro formas for new gym locations, including revenue projections, expense modeling, construction budgets, and break even timelines.
- Analyze demographic and market data to determine whether a prospective location has the customer base necessary to support a successful climbing gym.
- Model capital requirements and cash flow impacts during construction phases when revenue has not yet begun.
- Support acquisition evaluations and perform financial due diligence when applicable.
Pricing Strategy & Revenue Optimization
- Monitor sales trends across locations and departments, identifying opportunities for growth and margin improvement.
- Partner with the CEO and Directors to create and adjust pricing structures for memberships, programs, retail, and ancillary revenue streams to ensure coverage of operating costs and achievement of target profit margins.
- Evaluate promotional strategies, discounts, and program pricing to balance accessibility and profitability.
Cost Control, Purchasing & Vendor Management
- Maintain oversight of company purchasing practices and identify cost reduction opportunities without compromising quality or experience.
- Utilize Auxionize to manage reverse auctions for construction related services such as architects and general contractors and explore additional vendor categories where competitive bidding can reduce expenses.
- Evaluate vendor contracts, negotiate favorable terms, and monitor recurring expense categories for efficiency.
Lease Management & Real Estate Oversight
- Work with the CEO to negotiate new commercial leases and renewals, ensuring favorable terms aligned with long term financial strategy.
- Track lease deadlines, renewal windows, and escalation clauses to avoid missed opportunities and unnecessary cost increases.
- Evaluate occupancy costs as a percentage of revenue to ensure sustainable location level economics.
Leadership & Cross Functional Partnership
- Directly manage and mentor the Bookkeeper, IT Manager, Membership Manager, and Regional Retail Managers, providing clarity, accountability, and professional development support.
- Collaborate with HR to draft and refine financial policies related to stipends, SPIFF programs, reimbursements, expense management, and internal financial controls.
- Foster a culture of financial ownership among leaders at all levels, helping them understand how daily decisions impact company performance.

Experience, Skills, and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally in multi location retail, hospitality, fitness, or recreation environments.
- Experience managing organizations with $15M+ in annual revenue and supporting rapid expansion.
- Strong proficiency in NetSuite or similar ERP systems and experience integrating POS systems.
- Advanced financial modeling and pro forma development skills.
- Experience negotiating commercial leases and managing capital projects.
- Familiarity with reverse auction platforms such as Auxionize preferred.
- Strong communicator who can clearly explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, RGP, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Hours and Availability
- Full Time, Salaried Exempt (40+ hours per week)
- Hybrid – Holladay, UT (In office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday; Remote Wednesday and Friday)
- Early morning or late evening meetings as required due to time zone differences.
- Quarterly travel to out-of-state facilities to provide ongoing support and training
